A resting ! Great photo jklabin! Does it have spider silk in its beak to take to its nest? We 💚 these little hummers, and keep planting flowers to feed them.

We are seeing more (and specifically like this) now that the water is alive (not chlorinated)! This is good because their larvae eat lots of mosquito larvae. Someday we hope to see the full food chain restored, with fish and amphibians too.

Each week (closing Sunday night) we will raffle off one of these treasure-filled packs to someone who made an iNaturalist Observation (and joined the LA Naturequest) in or immediately around the Reservoirs! (See our previous posts for instructions)
Inside this fully-loaded sling/backpack, there’s a loop (with light!), a crazy multi-tool pen/laser pointer/stylus/compass/screwdriver, an Igloo water bottle, some patches for local parks, & a collapsible fan (not pictured)!
To enter the raffle, just screenshot your Observation, post it on Insta, and tag us. We’ll DM the winner later in the week.

! Just 68 total members so far - and only a few observations around the Reservoirs… Tomorrow we’ll post the awesome swag that will be awarded (by raffle) weekly to observers. Raffles close Sunday night, so you still have time to Observe this weekend. Each Observation gets you a ticket.

🗝️ 🔓✅We are told that gates will be unlocked on Sundays, moving forward. ‼️ but… ‼️
🚧🔓🚽🚫the BATHROOMS will remain CLOSED on Sundays - which seems like another public health risk so, bring extra wipes and hand sanitizer? (Or go to parks in Glendale, where they have bathrooms with soap!) 🚰🧼🫧
🗳️Also, Parks funding is on the ballot now, so Vote and let the City know what’s important to you.

Sharing the NatureQuest Indicator Species game cards here, and the QR code to learn more (both English and Spanish versions).
Indicator Species indicate high-quality habitat, generally, so knowing where those are helps scientists and policy makers know where to protect, and also where to improve habitat - including LADWP LA City Recreation & Parks NHMLA Community Science & Natural History Museum of L.A.

There is a petition to reopen the SL Rec Center on Sundays, which we 💯% support! Adding link in our bio. ALSO please vote to support our parks on the upcoming ballot! LA Parks are woefully underfunded, especially for staffing, and we need to change that.

The colonies of native that we’ve planted around the Reservoirs are now starting to spread their seed, as the pods burst open. We will help to gently speead some of this through the gardens, and the birds and wind will do the rest - as seeds float under the lacy parachute. (So please do not harvest! We are working on a Milkweed plant giveaway later this year!)
Also noticing this are the aptly named ! They may eat some of these seeds, but they may also be shepherding this process - ripping open the ripening pods so some seeds can escape and blow away to start new colonies.
🐝🦋🕊️🐛Besides the important keystone plant for populations, this Milkweed variety is visited by over 60 other native butterfly species, 17 moths, 8 caterpillars, and 117 species of !
