🤍 Have you ever met a horse who seems to know when you need a little extra love? That’s Rowan. 🤍

This 19-year-old Morgan cross gelding is looking for a non-riding companion home where he can enjoy life, make friends and show off his one-of-a-kind personality.

Rowan has a wonderfully affectionate side and loves nothing more than getting close to his people for some extra snuggles and attention. 🥹 He’s happiest when he can simply be near you, sharing those simple moments that make the bond with a horse so special.

And when he’s not busy being a cuddle bug, Rowan’s playful side comes out! 🤪 He loves running around with his horse friends, gets along well with both mares and geldings, and is especially fond of playing with young geldings. Imagine seeing his playful antics out in the pasture with his new herd! 🤩

Rowan is also a smart guy who loves learning new things and working with his people. He picks up new tricks quickly, making him a fun partner for ground-based activities and enrichment.

Rowan has retired from riding and requires medically required front shoes to help keep him comfortable. He’s looking for a home that will embrace all the things that make him special, from his affectionate nature to his playful personality and curious mind.

Ever wondered how horses get their beautiful coat colors? It all starts with genetics!

Horses have three basic coat colors: bay, black and chestnut. Genes help determine which color a horse will have and how red and black pigments appear in its coat.

Other genes can change these colors to create shades like palomino and buckskin, or patterns like roan, tobiano and Appaloosa spots.

🤔Did you know? Gray horses are born with a base coat color, but their hair gradually loses pigment as they age. Over time, they can become almost completely white!

Changing Leaves, Changing Needs 🍁🐴🤍

Colorado may still be enjoying warm temperatures, but shorter days and changing weather are a reminder that seasonal shifts bring new considerations for horse care.

Here are four things to keep in mind this fall:

🌾 Monitor pasture conditions. Frost and changing temperatures can affect grass sugar levels, potentially increasing the risk of laminitis in susceptible horses. Adjust grazing plans based on your horse’s individual needs.

💧 Prioritize water and forage. As temperatures cool, forage helps generate heat during digestion, which is especially important in colder weather. Adequate water intake is essential for healthy digestion, particularly as hay intake increases. Always provide clean, fresh water, and consult your veterinarian before adding electrolytes to your horse’s diet.

🐴 Watch for changing coats. Shorter daylight hours trigger winter coat growth, even when daytime temperatures remain warm. Regular grooming helps you spot skin irritation, cuts and changes in your horse’s condition.

🩺 Schedule a veterinary checkup. Fall is a good time to review vaccinations, dental health and overall condition. Routine veterinary care can help identify concerns before winter arrives, while healthy teeth help horses chew the forage they need to maintain their weight.

Yes, horses go to the dentist, too! Just like us, horses need routine dental care to keep their mouths comfortable and healthy.

During a dental exam, veterinarians check for sharp edges, hooks and other changes that can make it difficult or painful for a horse to eat. Regular care helps prevent painful sores and ulcers and keeps those horsey smiles in good shape! 😁

A big thank you to CSU Veterinary Health System and their incredible veterinary students for providing dental care to 26 of our CHR horses this past Friday! 💙

We love giving our horses the care they need while giving future equine veterinarians the opportunity to learn and gain hands-on experience. We’re grateful for the partnership that helps keep our horses healthy while supporting the next generation of equine veterinarians. 🫶🏻

Founded in 1986, Colorado Horse Rescue is the longest-standing horse rescue in the state. This 40th anniversary film celebrates the horses, adopters, volunteers, donors, trainers and supporters who help create a better world for horses.

From rescue and rehabilitation to adoption and programs that help keep horses with the people who love them, this work is about creating safe solutions for horses at every stage of their journey.

Wow, what an unforgettable night! 🤍

For 40 years, horses have been at the heart of Colorado Horse Rescue. And for 40 years, this community has shown up for them.

Every horse who walks through our gates carries a different story. But none of them make that journey alone. Behind every horse is a community filled with generosity and compassion, providing the hay, shelter, medical care, training, patience, and love it takes to help them find their way forward.

At this year’s Mane Event, we celebrated more than 40 years of rescue. We celebrated the people who have made this work possible: those who have carried the rope before us, those holding it today, and those who will carry it into the next 40 years.

We left Saturday with hearts overflowing with gratitude for every person who has helped make CHR what it is today. Your generosity and belief in this work have changed countless lives, and they give us hope for all the horses and families still awaiting help.

Thank you for being part of this community and for standing alongside these horses.

Here’s to the next 40 years, together. 🐴🤍

It’s time for another member feature!

For 40 years, Colorado Horse Rescue has been creating a better world for horses - not only through rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption, but by helping horse owners before they reach a crisis. Last year alone, they created safe, thoughtful outcomes for more than 250 horses in need.

From emergency evacuation through HorseAlert, to owner support programs, and community education, our goal is simple: make sure no horse falls through the cracks.
