(219)

First Nations is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the mission of building and revitalizing the economies of Native American communities on reservations and in rural areas. We do this work on many fronts, but the bottom-line results are stronger tribal organizations, businesses, governments and individuals.

There’s still time to support Native-led nonprofits this Native Nonprofit Day. 🌱

Native nonprofits continue to receive less than 0.4% of philanthropic funding, despite the critical work Native-led organizations are doing across Indian Country every day. As Native Nonprofit Day comes to a close, this is your last chance to maximize impact by supporting organizations through Native Ways Federation’s Native-led nonprofit list.

Today is Native Nonprofit Day! 🌱

Native-led organizations are creating meaningful change in communities across Indian Country, yet less than 0.4% of philanthropic dollars go to Native communities. Today is an opportunity to help uplift Native-led solutions by supporting Native nonprofits directly.

✉️ A Message from Director of Individual Giving Jona Charette ✉️

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and I’ve been thinking about what it means to care for ourselves and for all our relatives. In Native communities, wellness has always been circular, a way of remembering that mind, body, community, and spirit move together, each one shaping the others.

First Nations Community Partner Native American Community Academy Foundation teaches this through their Wellness Wheel, a model rooted in Indigenous knowledge. It reminds us that every part of who we are needs tending, and our people do our best to live that teaching.

Wellness begins with culture: the songs, stories, foods, and teachings that remind us of the wisdom passed down from those who came before us. Here are some suggestions for staying well this month and year-round:

🟠 Invest in gardens that feature local native and traditional foods – honor the role of food in our lives for health and restoration.

Members of First Nations’ Native Farmer Professional Cohort came together in April for an in-person conservation planning workshop on the ancestral lands of the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation. The group met as part of the Stewarding Native Lands’ Community-Led Conservation of Native American Farms and Grasslands project, which supports two distinct cohorts in uplifting traditional knowledge and stewardship practices through a supportive network.

The 16 cohort participants explored rangeland management principles and the conservation planning process and addressed resource concerns and opportunities through a hands-on field session at Seka Hills. They left with the groundwork for their own conservation plans and goals, as well as strengthened connections to one another in advancing local food systems and stewardship.

This month, First Nations released the Protecting Bering Sea Ecosystems report, a resource designed to elevate Native-led work in the Bering Sea region addressing primary threats to Bering Sea marine resources, such as climate change, exploitation, and governance. The report provides funding and policy and governance recommendations to ensure that this cultural resource – the foundation for many Alaska Native communities’ languages, subsistence practices, and identity – is protected and sustained for generations to come.

The report also calls attention to the critical importance of Alaska Native voices in restoring balance to the Bering Sea marine ecosystem. First Nations’ new blog post shares perspectives and insights from Mellisa “Maktuayaq” Johnson (Nome Eskimo Community tribal member) on upholding responsibilities of stewarding land and sea resources in the Bering Sea.
