This year, Opportunity Tree’s scholarship program in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, continues to transform lives. For 14 years, the program has supported youth despite the many challenges facing the country, where hundreds of NGOs have closed.

In 2025, 22 students began the year with scholarships that cover school fees and vital expenses. Each has successfully completed their semester, proving their resilience and commitment.

One of them, Jessica (19), has been part of the program since 2018. Today, she is in her third year of Social Sciences at university and also works as a preschool educator. Her dream is to graduate, specialize, and keep contributing to her community.

Jessica shares: “Thanks to God, my family, my community, and the donors, I’ve been able to study, work, and pursue my dream of becoming a professional. My message to other youth is: keep dreaming, keep going, no matter the challenges.”

Last month, Opportunity Tree had the incredible opportunity to travel to the Quiché region of Guatemala to visit our partner, Limitless Horizons Ixil. This organization is making a profound impact on the local community by empowering the Indigenous Ixil Maya through education.

During our visit, we had the privilege of touring their community library, meeting with families, and seeing the exciting progress of their newly inaugurated High School. This state-of-the-art facility will provide expanded, modern spaces for classes and school activities.

Their middle school, Colegio Horizontes, which opened in 2022, is at full capacity and the new High School will allow even more students to access education, giving them the tools to reach their fullest potential.

Exciting news from our partner in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua!

Opportunity Tree is proud to support the Hester J. Hodgdon Foundation in increasing literacy access in Nicaragua. One of their main projects has been the community library, which, in addition to providing access to reading materials, also offers classes, workshops, and other impactful community development activities.

The library has applied with the local government to become a business and its own entity, a process to be completed this month! This lays the groundwork for the library to be more local and self-sustaining. Join us in supporting this important endeavor!

Opportunity Tree is proud to support educational access in Nicaragua by providing scholarships to youth in the Matagalpa region. This year the scholarship program began with 23 recipients from elementary to university levels. All 23 have successfully finished their first semester of the school year despite challenges with ongoing political involvement in educational institutions.

One of the students, Josué, shares his story as a scholarship recipient: "For me, the scholarship program has been of great importance for my professional and academic preparation." Josué has faced economic difficulties throughout his degree program, as his university is over 100 km from home. He shares that this scholarship has provided him with a solution to these issues so he can focus on his studies and accomplish his dream of being a Forestry Technician.

Opportunity Tree is proud to support Limitless Horizons Ixil (LHI), an organization working to advance the educational resources and opportunities of the Ixil-Maya people in Chajul, Guatemala.

In 2022, LHI opened Colegio Horizontes, a middle school whose majority population is young Indigenous women. The middle school has 72 students and has been a source of hope and empowerment for local youth since its inception. Due to this success, they are expanding Colegio Horizontes to include a high school to serve 50 local students. Construction began in January 2024 and is going well, with an estimated completion in January 2025.

Our partner, HJH Libraries for All, works to improve literacy and access to books in Rivas, Nicaragua. Their community library in San Juan del Sur is an inviting place where youth and adults gather to browse books in Spanish and English, use the computers, do homework, and attend community events.

They are in the process of moving the location of this library and need your help in renovating the space! They are currently in their Match for the Move campaign where all donations made through July 15th will be matched up to $10,000! Consider donating and making an impact on literacy growth and community development in Central America.

In Rivas, Nicaragua we are proud to partner with Hester J Hodgdon Libraries for All, a remarkable local NGO dedicated to nurturing community and school library programs. Together, we're on a mission to cultivate a love for reading and grow literacy across in rural Nicaragua!

Opportunity Tree is proud to support educational access in rural areas of Nicaragua, where the school year runs from February - November. This means it's back to school time for our students! One of our partners, Hester J. Hodgdon Libraries for All, took this break to bring fun activities to their mobile library communities in the Rivas region, as well as bring more books to the main library in San Juan del Sur!

Happy Giving Tuesday from Opportunity Tree!

We support local non-profits in Central America working to improve educational access for rural youth. This includes scholarships for tuition and school transportation in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, where a generous donation of $15 supports a secondary student's education costs for a month.
