Fair Housing Justice Center

Fair Housing Justice Center FHJC's mission is to eliminate housing discrimination; promote open & inclusive communities; and strengthen enforcement of fair housing laws in NYC region.

The Fair Housing Justice Center (FHJC), a nonprofit civil rights organization, is dedicated to eliminating housing discrimination; promoting policies that foster open, accessible, and inclusive communities; and strengthening enforcement of fair housing laws in the New York City region. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., once said, “For as long as there is residential segregation, there will be a de fact

o segregation in every area of life. So the challenge is here to develop an action program.” Fair Housing Justice Center has developed an action program to systematically eliminate housing discrimination in the New York City region. We serve the five boroughs of New York City and the seven surrounding New York counties of Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester. The FHJC assists individuals and organizations with allegations of housing discrimination by providing fair housing counseling, investigative assistance, legal referral, and/or assistance with filing administrative complaints. FHJC’s counseling and investigative services are provided to the general public free of charge without regard to household income.

The FHJC office is closed today in observance of Juneteenth. While we recognize there’s still a long road ahead in the pursuit of full equality, today we choose to celebrate freedom, honor the progress made, and make room for joy.

E-commerce is booming, causing a sharp spike in emissions from delivery trucks. But not all neighborhoods are being affected equally. “The reason why a lot of these warehouses are placed where they are is based on histories of redlining.”

A post-pandemic boom in e-commerce correlated with statewide health inequities that are hitting low-income communities the hardest, the report found. “The reason why a lot of these warehouses are placed where they are is based on histories of redlining,” its author told City

The New York State budget was passed this Wednesday, May 27th. We celebrate the $4 million funding allocation to the Fair Housing Testing, Education, and Networking Program and continue our advocacy for the passage of the Vicarious Liability for Housing Discrimination Act (S2635/A1738) and the Source of Income Proxy Discrimination Protection Act (S1130/A4120). See FHJC’s website for more information on our Policy Advocacy.

Our Policy Director, Britny McKenzie, spoke at yesterday’s rally to fund CCHR at $25 million.

The Mayor’s Executive Budget cuts the NYC Commission on Human Rights by $1.5M.

We demand a restoration for the funding to , the only agency dedicated to eliminating housing discrimination through public education, testing, investigations, and litigation. As Britny states, “If the City Council and the Mayor are serious about eliminating barriers to housing and expanding opportunities to protect millions of New Yorkers from discrimination, cutting funding from CCHR is not the answer.” We’re calling on and to reverse the cuts and invest $25M in the Commission.

Thank you for standing with us, .

“I was stunned when I saw the questions on the application.” An Arkansas community where “Jews, Black people, homosexuals and anyone with heritage that isn’t white and European are banned” is being sued.

Return to the Land, a 160-acre development requiring members be white and heterosexual, is breaking fair housing and civil rights laws, according to a lawsuit.

This AAPI Heritage Month, we celebrate the diverse cultures, histories, and voices that have shaped our neighborhoods, cities, and movements for justice. At the Fair Housing Justice Center, we believe everyone deserves equal access to housing—free from discrimination based on race, national origin, disability, family status, or any protected characteristic. Together, we can help create more inclusive and equitable communities for all.
