Queenspace, Inc is dedicated to promoting the work and careers of young artists, curators and art professionals. Three artists-in-residence are afforded free studio space for the term of one year, from November to November. Artists are nominated by industry professionals, and final selections are made by the board from the list of nominees. Queenspace does not currently accept unsolicited nominati
ons or applications. Queenspace developed as a grass roots organization of artists who were asking landlords in Long Island City, NY to repurpose space in unused buildings as studios. These efforts were formally organized into a 501-C3 charitable LLC in 2007. A program of rotating artist exhibitions was added in 2008 on the ground floor of an apartment building donated by the Levine family. In 2013, as affordable studio space in New York and its environs became scarce, Queenspace shifted its focus and reorganized as a residency program housed in all three floors of the building. The first resident class entered the program in the fall of 2014. The current Board of Directors of Queenspace includes founding members Michael Levine and Marjorie Levine, program director and curator Isolde Brielmaeir, art attorney Amy Goldrich, artist Hank Willis Thomas, and art advisor and curator Teka Selman.
