We have assisted supporting LFD in responding to two major fires over the last week. Given the timing of each event, and not to disrupt our team members who are working, a small contingent of our retired personnel were activated for both incidents. At the Justin Circle fire, Remi Fortin and Al Sypek offered snacks and beverages to responders. Remi Fortin and Brian Southmayd ensured responders' hydration and energy needs were met at the Gerry Lane fire. Good job team!

On March 21st, a group of ALERT team members participated in a search and rescue drill in the Musquash area.

After meeting at a designated location on Faucher Road, the group was given a map and compass review as well as a communication plan. They were then directed to locate a hiker who was lost. The “lost hiker” was actually teammate volunteer Brian Southmayd. Brian was ambulatory and could communicate, but was lost near a ravine and some trails that he noted were marked in blue.

The group divided into two teams with a captain, a medical person, and designated a communications manager. As one team got closer to the suspected area they began using a whistle and calling Brian’s name. Brian responded and was successfully found.

As soon as Brian was located the second team was notified to stand down and the two groups met up. Once regrouped, the team did a nearly four mile round trip hike through some Musquash trails to become more familiar with them.

The final segment of that 8am to 12 noon session was a debriefing. The group agreed that outstanding radio and verbal communication was the highlight of the day.
