Few people ask what happens next.

Where will she live?

How will she pay the bills?

Who will watch the kids while she works?

How will she rebuild a credit score someone else destroyed?

How does she explain years of missing work history?

How does she start over when she has nothing left?

People love the story of a survivor leaving.

They don't talk nearly enough about the reality of rebuilding.

For many survivors, leaving isn't the finish line.

It's the beginning.

That's why we run.

Because surviving should not mean rebuilding alone.

That’s often what gaslighting does: it repeatedly denies, rewrites, or minimizes your experience until you start second-guessing what you saw, felt, or heard. Over time, it can create deep self-doubt—and it’s rarely “just that.” Gaslighting commonly shows up alongside other forms of abuse as part of a bigger pattern of power and control.

If you notice a cycle of confusion, apologizing for things you didn’t do, or relying on someone else to tell you what “really” happened, that pattern matters. Outside support and a trusted perspective can help you reconnect with your own reality and options. 🧠💜

We've seen an uptick in well-meaning supporters calling Helpline with needs outside of survivor services, so this is a friendly reminder of when to use Helpline and when to use one of our other methods of contact.

Helpline is available 24 hours a day for survivors of domestic abuse and trafficking, their concerned loved ones who need support, service providers who are working with a survivor and need information, and our partners in the medical and law enforcement fields who are working in real time with a survivor in need.

Please do not call Helpline to inquire about donations, CDVIP (Certified Domestic Violence Intervention Program) classes, media requests, training requests, etc. Our Helpline is staffed by Safe Voices staff members 24 hours a day, and these extra calls interfere with our ability to be there when survivors need us.
