Heather Gialanella is a 53-year-old mother of three from New Jersey living with Cystic Fibrosis, and she is looking forward to conquering another Xtreme Hike.

Heather was the Ambassador of the 2017 Xtreme Hike in Harriman, NY, and managed to complete the 21-mile hike with 48% lung function before Trikafta was approved.

Heather is always determined and inspired to challenge herself to complete these huge tasks because she can’t ever accept that CF could stop her. The pressure she's put on herself through the years, working out, hiking, and staying active while struggling to breathe, has always led her to stay on top, and that’s where she's going to stay in the 2026 Xtreme Hike!

Cystic fibrosis has never defined Nicole; it has challenged her to push harder and live stronger. From being a multi-sport athlete and competitive softball player to running a marathon and staying active every day at 44, Nicole has always believed that movement is one reason her lungs remain as strong as they are. Although CF is an invisible disease and most people never see the daily battle behind her smile, that reality motivates her to keep fighting. She stays strong for more time with her husband, children, family, and friends, and she keeps moving because every day is a gift Nicole refuses to take for granted.

Show your support of the CF community by participating in our upcoming Sports Challenge at MetLife Stadium on Saturday, October 24! Register today: https://fundraise.cff.org/sportschallenge

Research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has driven decades of progress in cystic fibrosis. It led to the discovery of the CFTR gene and deepened our understanding of the disease, laying the foundation for today’s treatments and future therapies in development. Despite this progress, significant unmet needs remain. There is still no cure, and many people with CF cannot benefit from existing therapies.

Today, teens from across the country are advocating on Capitol Hill and online for the Foundation’s 18th annual Teen Advocacy Day. They are sharing their personal stories and asking members of Congress to increase funding for the NIH to sustain a robust research pipeline, support innovation, and accelerate progress toward treatments for every person with CF and, ultimately, a cure.

Help amplify their voices. Urge your members of Congress to increase NIH funding: https://act.cff.org/campaign/increasefundingNIH/
