It’s Humanities Councils Week! HumanitiesAR is one of 56 state and jurisdictional councils in the US that use the humanities and culture to bring people together.
Carolina Mendoza’s quote perfectly embodies our purpose: “Making Connections. Making Discovery Possible.” Our recent Harmonizing in Arkansas program series allowed audiences to discover numerous little-known Arkansas contributions to different music genres and how local musicians and communities helped shape American music and culture. Participants examined the nation’s history through the music people created, the experiences they preserved, and the ways those traditions continue to connect people today.

As part of Humanities Councils Week, Federation of State Humanities Councils and the Mellon Foundation are celebrating how Humanities Councils bring people together, connect communities, and connect us to the humanities.

It’s Humanities Councils Week!

HumanitiesAR is joining the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the Mellon Foundation to celebrate how Humanities Councils bring people together!

Through our Harmonizing in Arkansas series, HumanitiesAR brought scholars and live performers together to explore Arkansas’s musical traditions and their influence on American music—from jazz and rock to folk music and spirituals.

These programs show how the humanities connect generations, spark new perspectives, and bring communities together.

The HumanitiesAR REACH Grant is available to educators teaching Pre-K through 12th grades at public schools across Arkansas.

Do you have a humanities-based classroom project in mind? Need books or classroom materials? Have you see a professional development opportunity that you're interested in? The REACH Grant can provide up to $1,000 to support eligible projects, supplies, and in-state or virtual professional development.

Cooler weather means it’s a great time to get students outside for a field trip to one of Arkansas’s 53 state parks!

HumanitiesAR’s Arkansas State Parks Field Trip Grant can support students learning about Arkansas’s history, people, places, and stories while exploring the state with an Arkansas State Park interpreter led field trip.

Grant funds may be used for expenses associated with bus(es), driver fees, and substitute teachers. All teachers need to do is contact a state park to schedule your visit, then go to humanitiesar.org and apply!

The REACH Grant provides up to $1,000 to help Arkansas's public school teachers bring humanities-based learning to life in pre-K-12 classrooms.

Funding can support:

🏛 Humanities-based classroom projects in subjects like history, English language arts, literacy, social studies, ethics, language studies, anthropology, and archeology

📚 Classroom books, writing utensils, educational software, and other supplies

🎓 In-state or virtual professional development, including conferences, workshops, seminars, and webinars

Applications are due on the 1st of each month, except December. A principal signature is required, and applicants must teach at an Arkansas public school.
