Robert Smalls was born into slavery but became a hero during the Civil War.

He famously commandeered a Confederate ship, the Planter, and led it to freedom, eventually delivering it to Union forces.

After the war, Smalls became a politician, advocating for the rights of freedmen and serving in the U.S. House of Representatives.
