The Husker Produce Farm on East Campus is making impacts across the campus and Lincoln communities. The first-year project — made possible by portions of the 2024 We Give Blood $1 million prize — produced nearly 7.5 tons of fruits, vegetables and herbs. The produce went to campus dining halls, the Food Bank of Lincoln and Food Fort, a Lincoln nonprofit that distributes food through community programs.
“We want this farm to bring together all three parts of the university’s mission — research, teaching and outreach. Reliable, commercial-scale production gives students authentic, hands-on learning experiences that are difficult to replicate in a classroom, while allowing us to grow fresh food for our community. The goal is to connect what we do in research and education with real-world needs beyond the university.” — Sam Wortman, professor in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture and principal investigator on the project.

From a kindergarten dream to the Paraguayan wilderness 🦴✨
Kyra Mauntel, a junior at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, turned her childhood curiosity into real-world experience. Through hands-on museum work and mentorship at the University of Nebraska State Museum, Mauntel landed a spot on an international research expedition in Paraguay, studying how bones change over time to understand fossil formation.
“I’ve wanted to do this since I was a little kid, and now I’m actually getting to do it,” she said. “I don’t know exactly what my research is going to be yet or where I’ll end up for graduate school. But I know I’m on the right path, and I’m excited to keep finding out what’s next.”

As an ambassador for Abbott, junior Taylor Hostert is asking Husker Nation to roll up its sleeves this fall. The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is competing in the Abbott We Give Blood Drive, a Big Ten competition in which the school with the most donations earns $1 million for student life initiatives.
As a history major, Hostert likes to look at the bigger picture. When she learned that there had been a nationwide blood shortage since 2020 and that a single donation could save up to three lives, she knew she wanted to help.
But for Hostert, the competition is about more than winning: “It’s really important to get young people donating blood again since we're in a real crisis in the U.S. — all day, every day, people need blood to save their lives.”

The Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory, in operation since 1920, involves advanced engineering and high-technological science. Its sophisticated test results provide information crucial for industry standards worldwide — for both producers and manufacturers.
The test lab’s reports on tractors’ power output, fuel efficiency, mechanical safety and noise levels are all publicly available. Over the decades, the lab has tested more than 2,300 models.
“You can see what will give you the best return on your inputs for fuel, diesel and diesel exhaust fluid (injected into diesel tractor exhaust to reduce harmful emissions),” Eric Smith, the lab’s director, said.

The Coliseum filled with people over the lunch hour Oct. 2, as the University of Nebraska–Lincoln honored 870 employees who reached five-year service milestones during the annual Celebration of Service.

ICYMI — During his Sept. 22 Heuerman Lecture, former Nebraska Gov. and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns emphasized the importance of the state’s innovations in commodities, including beef, corn, soybeans, pork and popcorn, while also addressing the challenges facing rural Nebraska.

“I was the governor of a state that has everything in its favor when it comes to agriculture, from the grasslands of western Nebraska that we affectionately call the Sandhills, to the corn and soybean fields across the east and central part of our state — we are a powerhouse.”
