What mysteries are still buried in the ash?
Thirty-five years on — well, 12 million technically — Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park continues to offer up important glimpses of prehistoric life in Nebraska. Consider, for example, Borophaginae, known commonly as bone-crushing dogs. In recent years, researchers have found footprints believed to be from these carnivores and tooth marks that seem to match the dogs’ teeth in the bones of rhinos, horses and camels that died in the ash. "You cannot use your voice, your silence or your gifts if you're not fully engaged. Be present. Lean in. Make things happen. Embrace a cause, whether it be supporting children in developing countries like Haiti or sharing a conversation with a lonely woman next door. Go out of your way to make someone’s day. If you participate in this way, I promise your world — our world — will be better." — Susan M. Sheridan, George Holmes Professor of educational psychology and director emeritus of the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools, to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's August graduates
