Happy Labor Day!

Long before Labor Day became the end-of-summer holiday we know today, Nebraska communities celebrated with parades, bands, picnics and athletic competitions. Nebraska officially recognized Labor Day in 1889, making it one of the earliest states to establish the holiday. This Labor Day, we celebrate the people and work that have helped shape Nebraska's history.

During Nebraska Archaeology Month, we're highlighting Engineer Cantonment, an important archaeological site just north of Omaha in the Ponca Hills.

In the winter of 1819–1820, Major Stephen H. Long led the first federally authorized scientific expedition following Lewis and Clark. The expedition established a winter encampment called Engineer Cantonment, where scientists spent eight months documenting the plants, animals, geology and geography of the Great Plains.

Nearly two centuries later, archaeologists rediscovered the site on the farm of Gloria and Herb Gibreal. In 2005, the Gibreals generously donated the 3.73-acre property to the Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation for permanent preservation.

Join us September 12 for a WanderNebraska/Trail Trek guided hike and dedication of new interpretive panels, and discover the story of this nationally significant Nebraska archaeological site.

A recent visit to the Petrified Wood and Art Gallery in Ogallala offered a glimpse into one of Nebraska’s fascinating collections, from petrified wood and gemstones to fossils and Native American artifacts.

NSHSF Director of Programs and Partnerships Teresa Breazile visited with Executive Director Michael Vail and explored the gallery’s unique treasures, including petrified wood music boxes and an ancient Orthoceras fossil.

The gallery is one of many fascinating destinations featured through WanderNebraska. There’s still time to join the adventure through September 30!

Cottonwood Society members recently gathered at the Historic Japanese Hall at the Legacy of the Plains Museum in Gering for a special evening exploring Nebraska’s Japanese American history.

Vickie Sakurada Schaepler shared personal stories and historical photographs, bringing the Hall’s history and the experiences of Japanese American families to life.

Experiences like these give Cottonwood Society members unique opportunities to connect with Nebraska’s history and the people preserving it.
