KAUAI COMMUNITY PLAYERS ANNOUNCES AUDITIONS FOR
DEATH OF A SALESMAN

ABOUT THE PLAY:

Widely considered one of the greatest masterpieces of modern American drama, Arthur Miller’s Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play Death of a Salesman is a devastatingly poignant exploration of the American Dream.

The play follows traveling salesman W***y Loman as he is forced to confront the heartbreaking realization that his life, career, and identity are failures built on fragile illusions. Fusing intense realism with fluid, dreamlike memory sequences, Miller crafts a
timeless masterpiece about family loyalty, the weight of unfulfilled expectations, and the quiet tragedies of everyday life. To perform Death of a Salesman is to take part in a cornerstone of American theatrical history.

THIS AUDITION IS STRICTLY FOR THE FOUR MEMBERS OF THE LOMAN FAMILY ONLY.

The interpersonal dynamic of these four characters drives the play’s themes and emotional impact. The script calls for 8 men and 5 women. Auditions for the remaining roles will take place in January 2027.

AUDITION DATES:
Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, 3-5 PM,
--OR--
Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, 2-5 PM

CALLBACK AUDITIONS (by invitation):
Thursday, October 15, 5-8pm

AUDITION LOCATION:
KCC Performing Arts Center Mainstage
3-1901 Kaumuali'i Hwy., Lihue

PERFORMANCE DATES AND LOCATION:
April 9 through 25 (Thurs.-Fri.-Sat. at 7:00 PM, Sundays at 4 PM)
Puhi Theatrical Warehouse
4411E Kikowaena Street, Lihue

AUDITION PREPARATION

We want this to be a collaborative, welcoming experience! Please prepare two elements:

1. Character Understanding & Motivation:

Be prepared to discuss what draws you to the character you’re auditioning for. What drives them? What do you understand about their internal conflicts and relationships with other
characters? We aren't looking for an academic lecture—a warm, conversational tone as if we're chatting over coffee is perfect! Show us why you're passionate about this play.

2. Monologue Performance:

Prepare a monologue from Death of a Salesman spoken by the character for whom you are auditioning (memorized preferred). Choose a piece that helps demonstrate your vocal, emotional, and physical understanding of the character. See below for a link to the pdf of the script.

AVAILABLE ROLES: THE LOMAN FAMILY

• W***y Loman (Age: Early 60s) – The tragic heart of the play, W***y is a veteran traveling salesman unraveling under the weight of his own unrealized dreams. Unable to let go of his belief in the promise of success, W***y becomes trapped between painful reality and nostalgic illusions as he struggles to reconcile his life's output with his grand aspirations.

• Linda Loman (Age: Early 60s) – W***y’s fiercely loyal and protective wife, Linda is the emotional anchor holding the family together. She sees W***y’s vulnerabilities and failures clearly, yet she fiercely defends his dignity against the world and their sons
even as she enables W***y’s self-delusions.

• Biff Loman (Age: Early 30s, approx. 34) – The Lomans’ eldest son is a former high school football hero whose life stalled after discovering a deeply painful family secret. Honest and reflective, Biff comes to reject his father’s grand illusions and longs for a simple, grounded life working with his hands outdoors.

• Happy Loman (Age: Early 30s, approx. 32) – The younger son who lives in Biff’s shadow, Happy has inherited and fully embraced W***y’s flawed definition of success. He is a charismatic womanizer and assistant buyer who hides his inner
emptiness behind bravado and unearned confidence.

• First Read-Thru: Saturday, October 24, 2026 | 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM (Lihue)

• Early Rehearsals (Oct–Dec 2026): Scheduled around cast availability for the 4 Loman family actors.

• Full Cast Rehearsals: Begin late January 2027 (Mondays through Thursdays).

• Note on Time Commitment: Because the plot centers around the Loman family dynamic, these four roles will require a high time commitment in January, February, and March 2027.

• Tech Week: March 15 – 19, 2027 (No conflicts allowed; please note this coincides with Spring Break).

CALLBACK AUDITIONS:
By Invitation. Week of Sept. 28-Oct. 1, 6-9 PM. Those called back will be contacted and given the location and exact date and time of their callback audition.

PREPARATION FOR AUDITIONS:
Acting: In the spirit of Come From Away, please prepare a 1-minute conversational true story about a random act of kindness you shared with a stranger, (whether given or received). Focus on sincerity, connection, and using your natural voice. Please do not memorize a monologue--simply tell the story believably--as if we were having a cup of coffee together.

Music: Please be prepared to present a 16-to-32 bar cut of a contemporary musical theatre, folk, pop, Celtic, or soft rock song. Think acoustic storyteller style. Songs should highlight your narrative ability, natural vocal tone, and rhythmic energy. Avoid over-vocalized R & B runs, RAP, or traditional musical theatre belting songs. Please bring sheet music in the correct key if you would like piano accompaniment. "Karaoke" style music accompaniment is fine as well, but please bring your portable speaker to amplify the sound. Guitars or other accompanying instruments are okay too. No a capella songs please.
