Some tips inspired by student’s public service announcements on how to create a healthy me and healthy we!🫶🏼

We recently partnered with Kauaʻi Domestic Violence Task Force and Kauaʻi Resilience Project to develop a Healthy Me Healthy We Youth PSA Competition. We received so many great public service announcements via video and flyers - here are some of the messages students shared through their work.

🎓 Last night, our coalition members joined Kauaʻi High School’s Project Grad to educate and raise awareness against drinking and driving. We hosted hands-on activities where students experienced the impacts of alcohol on balance, vision, and motor skills. After completing the activities students signed a pledge against drinking and driving.

Did you know?

Project Grad started in Maine after 18 teenagers died in alcohol-related crashes, with seven from one community. Devastated parents organized the first Project Grad in 1980 to prevent drunk driving tragedies by providing a safe, supervised celebration for seniors. The success of this event led to Project Grad parties being held in all 50 states!

Mahalo to all of the school staff, parents, and community members for the time and effort put into continuing this tradition and keeping our youth safe. Prevention saves lives!❤️

Alcohol and dopamine🧠

Alcohol has powerful impacts on dopamine and reward pathways in the brain. Heavy drinking causes our brain to produce less of the feel good chemical overtime.📉

Here are some natural ways to increase dopamine:
- work towards a goal🏆
-do something kind for someone💌
- sunlight🌞
-spend time with loved ones🤍
- exercise + movement🏃🏽
- meditate🧘🏽‍♂️
- eat good food🍜
- sleep well💤

Advocacy training was a success! Mahalo to our partners Chelsea from and Aunty Val from To***co-Free Kauaʻi ***cofreehawaii for sharing how to get involved in the legislative process and empowering our youth and community members to make their voices heard.

A huge mahalo to our panel - Hawaiʻi State Rep. Luke Evslin, County Council Chair Mel Rapozo, and Kauaʻi Police Department’s Sergeant Unutoa for taking time out of their busy schedules to join us, share their stories, and emphasize the importance of our own stories in making a difference.

Another mahalo to Kamehameha Schools Resource Office for letting us utilize their space. And of course mahalo to those who attended! If you couldn’t make it this time don’t worry, keep an eye out for future training and leadership opportunities.

It takes a village, together we can make a difference🤍🙌🏼

Also, at the end of the training, we hope teen participants and adults who support alcohol policy for the safety of the community would like to stay for a sign-waving event hosted by Kekoa “Pure Aloha” Carvalho, To The Top foundation and Miss Laycie Love (Keep it Flowing) at the Līhu‘e Airport intersection at 12noon. Sign wavers may use the room to create signs from 11:30-11:55 pm or bring your own premade sign.
