🔥Turning green waste into a resource, not another disaster risk! 🌱

In the wake of Hurricane Lowell, reducing green waste loads is more important than ever. Mahalo to the County of Kaua‘i for partnering together on the CRB Green Waste Management program!

We now have 2 biochar kilns and 3 wood chippers available on rotation to help farmers manage green waste on-site, reduce Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) breeding habitat, avoid costly hauling, and turn debris into something useful for the ʻāina.

Farmers are also experimenting with the effectiveness of mixing biochar in with mulch for CRB resistance. 🤞

More info on the latest on our SNAP Retailer Authorization denial. Sadly, it looks like we won't be able to offer SNAP for at least another 6 months or more.

Mālama Kauaʻi, a nonprofit that works to boost local food production and access on the Garden Isle, had its Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program accreditation revoked, despite reapplying and submitting an appeal.

Six weeks after the hurricane, recovery is far from over for many of our neighbors.

Most volunteer crews have gone home, and local folks are back to work. But the needs haven’t disappeared.

Sometimes all it takes is a truck, a few tools, or a couple of hours to make a real difference.

If you know someone who had significant hurricane damage to their primary residence please have them submit a report here before Saturday. We are going to be closing the intake to new applications so we can close out our current emergency relief grants and see what is left for the next phase of rebuilding grants.

There are not enough slides on Instagram or enough words in a caption to share everything that’s going on.

But one thing is for certain - after seeing how our community responds, there is nowhere we would rather be than here when disaster hits.

Our community response is so powerful, so committed, and so full of genuine aloha.

The storm exposed our vulnerabilities.
Recovery is our chance to address them.

Community resilience is something we build, not something we declare.

Resilience is built through local food, stable housing, strong neighborhoods, community hubs, and relationships that last long after the emergency.

And we’re here for it.
