WE ALL LONG FOR A CONNECTION TO THE LAND. 🤎

People have a natural desire to feel connected to the land.

I believe one of the most powerful connections is through the food it provides us.

What a blessing it is to live on Kauaʻi, where you can drive past our beautiful green pastures on your way to the beach.

One of my favorite times of day is when I go down to check the cattle at our ʻŌmaʻo pasture. The cattle come running to greet me, the sun is going down, the air is cooler, and the colors are so beautiful.

Hāʻupu Mountain in the distance, like a great guardian watching over us all.
Sometimes you'll see me out there with the cattle and the Longhorn. 🐂 I often get a honk from people driving by, and it always makes me smile.

It reminds me how we're all connected. To the land, to the animals, to each other, and to the food that nourishes us.

We care for the cattle, and their grazing helps keep the land healthy. They turn grass we can't eat into food that nourishes our families. And through that food, we connect with each other.

One of the most unexpected and rewarding parts of ranching has been the connections I've made with all of you.

Good people are hard to find. Good butchers are even harder.

Kelly was a godsend.

After I lost my brother, I'll always be grateful to John Lotisden for giving me Kelly's number. Kelly showed up when I was down and out, and from day one, nothing was ever a problem.

It was always, "We'll figure it out."

He's consistent, humble, and damn good at what he does.

Every animal is broken down by hand, with patience and skill. Kelly works a full day at his regular job, then comes here and cuts late into the night — sometimes into the early morning — making the steaks that end up on your dinner table.

Since they reopened on Monday, we've been dropping off chocolate boxes to FedEx by the vanload. Mahalo to everyone who ordered and who shared about us with their friends and family.

Now 10 days after Hurricane Lowell hit Kauai, we still have lots of work to do, but we're feeling optimistic, strong, and supported.

We have been enjoying giving tours to folks who remained on the island, and we're running special rates through September, including free tours for Hawaii residents (kamna'aina with Hawaii state IDs). We love what we do and want to keep working. We are also spreading the aloha — and chocolate — around the community as much as we can. So if Kauai is home, now is a great time to come experience our farm tours.

While a few areas of Kauai are still recovering, particularly the North Shore and a few Southside resorts, much of the island seems oddly normal. Plane ticket prices look very low, the weather is fantastic, and beaches are uncrowded. The island is pretty quiet and still so beautiful. Most grocery stores are open and fully restocked. Many restaurants are open. Seems like most of Kauai will be back open by October 1 — come visit!

Our gardens and tour path did not sustain major damage, but broader farm recovery will take some time. Good news: one of our most productive fields, called Kokoaloa (lots of cacao), was almost untouched. It took us a few days of clearing to get back there; I was happy to see those trees standing tall. And we had our first post-hurricane harvest today.

We aren’t through this yet, and it’ll take a big team to get us there. We see a path forward, and believe that we will emerge on the other side stronger.

Lots of exciting things are coming up in the coming weeks and months. We have a Reserve Tahitian vanilla extract release soon, and "Choctober" is also just around the corner

It’s been 34 years since a hurricane hit Kauai. That streak ended Monday night. Hurricane Lowell peaked between 10pm and 2am, and we took a beating.

The last couple of days have been back to basics. No phone, no power, no meetings, free of the complexity of day-to-day life. Brush cutting and hauling during the day, candlelit dinners at night. It’s kind of like camping but with more fallen trees and chainsawing.

The best part is my whole team is healthy and accounted for. We are working hard to take care of each other, our farm, and the Kauai community.

Our chocolate inventory is safe in our warehouse, which has power. We will be ready to ship chocolate soon.

We love what we do, and aren’t going to let a storm stop us from spreading the good word about our Hawaiian Grown chocolate! It’s a great way for me and my 37 employees to make a living, and we intend to keep it that way, whatever comes. Going through something with a team and coming out the other side, that’s worth a lot. And we’ll have some stories to tell.

Tours are back open and can be booked online. If you have friends on Kauai let them know. Our retail store in Kapaa is open for tastings and drop-ins.

RANCHER’S DAUGHTER’S RESERVE

WEEKLY ROUNDUP

We’re Safe. We’re Open. Kauaʻi Strong. 09.10.26

First, I just want to say thank you to everyone who has been DMing, texting, and checking in on us.

We’re safe. We’re okay.

There are a lot of people on Kauaʻi who were hit much harder than we were—homes damaged, trees down, and families still without power and water.

The last day has really just been about getting to whatever needs attention first.

We’ve had trees come down across fences, cattle that need water, and animals that need to be kept where they belong. There are still pastures I haven’t even been able to get to yet because some of our more remote areas are completely barricaded by fallen trees.

So we’re working our way through it, one thing at a time.

I was at the slaughterhouse until about 9:30 last night making sure everything stayed powered and, most importantly, keeping the meat in our chill box safe and cold.

We have more than 20 carcasses hanging in there—a tremendous amount of food, years of work raising those animals, and meat that belongs to ranchers and families across Kauaʻi. Losing that was simply not an option.

So I stayed until I knew everything was cold and safe.

Everything is cold. Everything is safe.

And I have to give a huge shout-out to the people who just showed up.

My husband has been on it nonstop. Eli and Julie from PCCC helped us out with the big generator. Robin Pereira came out right away and helped us get the generators hooked up so we could get the boxes running, and Brandon from DM Air Conditioning came out to make sure everything stayed cold and the meat stayed safe.

It’s unreal how everybody just comes together when you need them.

People show up, figure out what needs to be done, and keep things moving.

I am so grateful for every single one of them.

That’s the Kauaʻi I know. And I know a lot of families lost the food they had in their refrigerators and freezers when the power went out.

Many have been trying to call me if i had meat, and yes we still have a good amount stocked.

Minnie’s Mercantile ( our little ranch market) will be OPEN, and we still have frozen meat available, including:

We won’t have any fresh steaks until we get out power back.

More than anything, I hope you and your families are safe.

The hardest part of raising beef is the part nobody sees.

Most people see the finished steak.

What you don't see are the years before it.

I know these cattle.

I know their mothers.

I watched many of them be born.

I know the pastures they came from.

I watch them grow, all the way until it's time for harvest.

That's the hardest part of this work for me.

I don't think I'll ever get over it.

That's false.

Those are the words of people who don't know Kaua'i pasture grass.

I'm not feeding grain to manufacture marbling.

I'm not rushing an animal to finish it faster.

I let my cattle mature naturally.

In conventional agriculture, the question is:

"How fast can we finish this animal?"

My question is:

"Is this animal ready?"

Good grass.

Good genetics.

Knowing your cattle.

Giving them time.

That's not something a big company can manufacture.

AI can reproduce a lot of things these days too.

But it can't reproduce the knowledge of a multigenerational rancher.

Some things still take time.

It's like picking fruit.

Pick it too soon, it's green.

Wait too long, it's overripe.

There's a right time for everything — same with beef as it is with fruit.

I'm not growing beef to meet a demand you can find at Walmart or Costco.

I'm growing something exceptional for the customer who knows the difference.

The reward for me is watching my kids sit down to nourishing, homegrown beef I know exactly where it came from.

And it's when one of you sends me a picture of the dinner you made for your family.
