Fought while armistice negotiations were ongoing, United Nations (primarily U.S.) forces defended the strategically insignificant outpost against Chinese attacks to maintain credibility, resulting in high casualties for both sides.

Happy 78th birthday to the Air Force Reserve! After the U.S. Air Force became a separate military branch in 1947, the Air Force Reserve was formally established on April 14, 1948, by President Harry S. Truman. Reservists have continuously supported major operations from the Cold War to the Global War on Terror, humanitarian efforts, disaster responses and modern conflicts. Flying sophisticated aircraft, performing air refueling, intelligence, mobility and support missions worldwide are just some of the ways the “Citizen Airmen” component of the Air Force serves our nation.
