This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we invite our community to join us as we Speak Their Names. 💜

Each year, The Center for Women and Families gathers to honor and remember local lives lost to domestic violence. Together, we will pause to remember them, stand alongside their families, friends and loved ones, and reaffirm our commitment to ending domestic violence in our community.

Sometimes, equal treatment isn't fair treatment.

One common misunderstanding about fair housing is the idea that treating everyone exactly the same is always the fairest approach. But what happens when a standard policy or process creates a barrier for someone who is protected by fair housing laws?

Sometimes, the law requires a housing provider to make a reasonable exception or follow a different process.

For example:

🐕 A property has a no-pets policy, but a tenant needs an assistance animal because of a disability.

♿ A property has a standard parking policy, but a tenant needs an assigned accessible parking space because of a disability.

🏠 A survivor of domestic violence with a qualifying protective order may have the right to terminate a lease early under Kentucky law.

These situations don't mean that every request must be approved or that housing providers have to ignore their policies. Providers can evaluate requests, determine whether required documentation is sufficient, and, when appropriate, engage in an interactive process to identify a lawful solution.

Sometimes, treating people fairly means recognizing that different people may need different things to have an equal opportunity to use and enjoy their home.
