πŸ†˜ Sudan war refugees pushed into hunger as livelihoods collapse

New research from the Norwegian Refugee Council reveals that families displaced by Sudan's war are facing extreme hunger, repeated displacement, and total collapse of their livelihoods. In Chad alone, over 70% of households are skipping meals, and 9 in 10 women-headed households have no income whatsoever.

Only 45% of displaced children have regular access to education, and nearly 1 in 5 have none at all.

This is the reality Watoto Read works to change every day. Education is a lifeline, and these children cannot afford to wait.

πŸ™ Your Gift Goes Directly to a Child.

Right now, over 770 displaced and refugee children ages 3 to 5 in Chad's Lake Province are waiting for classrooms to be equipped so they can start learning. These are children who have already survived more than most adults ever will.
Watoto Read is funding:

πŸ“Œ Chad Is One of the Poorest Countries on Earth.

Chad ranks 186 out of 189 countries on the Human Development Index. Nearly half the population lives on less than $1.90 a day. Over 56% of children under 5 suffer from malnutrition. Nearly 50% drop out before finishing primary school.

Refugee children arrive here with nothing. The odds are stacked against them, but education changes the odds. That's why Watoto Read is here.

πŸ“š One Kit. Attendance Jumped from 65% to 95%.

Sometimes the simplest things make the biggest difference.

In 2023, Watoto Read distributed school supply kits, books, pencils, erasers, to refugee children in Chad. The result was extraordinary: school attendance jumped from 65% to 95%.

That's not just a statistic. That's hundreds of children who showed up, who stayed, who learned, because someone made sure they had the tools to do so.

Watoto Read has been quietly solving the overlooked barriers to education since our founding: building classrooms, supplying benches, training preschool teachers, and ensuring girls stay in school. Every donation makes this possible.

πŸ“š A Classroom Can Change Everything for Them.

For a child who has fled conflict in Chad, a preschool classroom means safety. It means routine. It means someone who sees them, teaches them, and believes in their future.

Watoto Read is working with the Jesuit Refugee Service to bring fully equipped Early Childhood Centers to three displacement sites in Lake Chad, Fourkoulom, Ngorerom, and Nguelia. Over 770 children will be reached.

But these centers need supplies, trained teachers, and your support to open their doors.

Will you help fill a classroom with hope today?

πŸ“Œ Girls in Chad Average Just 1.2 Years of School.

In Chad, the average girl completes only 1.2 years of school in her lifetime. Boys average 3.4 years. Only 22% of the population is literate.

For refugee girls, the barriers are even greater. That's why Watoto Read builds safe classrooms, distributes school kits, and sponsors high school fees, fighting to keep girls in school, one child at a time.

They're 3 Years Old. They've Known War.
In the displacement camps of Lake Chad, toddlers are growing up without the safety, stimulation, and joy that every child deserves. But a preschool classroom is changing that, one small hand at a time.

Watoto Read is helping to equip Early Childhood Centers in Chad so that children ages 3 to 5 can learn, play, and heal. Your gift today provides the toys, books, and learning materials that make a classroom come alive.

Because every child, no matter where they were born deserves a bright beginning.

πŸ“Œ This Crisis Has Been Going On for 20+ Years.

The Sudanese refugee crisis in Chad began in 2003 when violence erupted in Darfur. Today, roughly half of the refugees in Chad's camps have been there ever since, over two decades. These families have little hope of safely returning home.

Watoto Read is committed for the long haul, because these children can't afford for the world to forget them.

🏫 From Dirt Floors to Real Classrooms.

In Goz Beida, Chad, children were learning outdoors, sitting in sandy dirt under the scorching desert sun, with no shelter and no safety. That's the reality for refugee children when proper classrooms don't exist.

Watoto Read is changing that. We've constructed and renovated 9 classrooms in Djabal and Goz Amir refugee camps, each one built by local refugee craftsmen, each one serving up to 120 children every single day.

These aren't just buildings. They're a place where a child can sit, focus, and believe that their future is worth building.

πŸ“Œ Did You Know? Half Are Children.

Of the more than one million Sudanese refugees living in Chad, 50% are age 12 or younger. Half of an entire refugee population is made up of children who didn't choose war, displacement, or a life without school.

This is why Watoto Read exists, because every child in a refugee camp deserves an education, and the chance to build a future no conflict can take away.
