Young Mended Hearts was created to give hope and support to young adults (ages 18 to 55 suggested) who have heart disease, including congenital heart disease (CHD).

Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) is a serious and often underdiagnosed condition in which abnormal proteins build up in the heart, leading to heart failure and other complications. Many patients wait years for an accurate diagnosis, and those delays are not experienced equally across communities.

Dr. Malhotra, a cardiologist and amyloidosis specialist, will explain how a hereditary form of the disease is more common in people of African descent, why common conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes can mask the signs of ATTR-CM, and how social and economic factors can affect who gets tested, diagnosed, and treated.

This World Amyloidosis Day, we're raising awareness for transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) — a serious and often overlooked cause of heart failure.

ATTR-CM happens when a protein in your blood folds incorrectly, causing amyloid deposits to build up —most commonly in your heart, causing the heart muscle to thicken and stiffen. The heart then becomes unable to pump blood effectively.

Many patients with ATTR-CM go undiagnosed for years due to little awareness about the disease.

Today, on World Amyloidosis Day, we're raising our voices for a condition often overlooked and misdiagnosed, amyloid light chain (AL) amyloidosis.

AL Amyloidosis occurs when there is a buildup of abnormal protein called amyloid in your organs, causing them to not work properly. For patients and families, the journey to a correct diagnosis can be long and frustrating.

Awareness is the first step toward change. By recognizing the signs and symptoms, we can identify and manage amyloidosis sooner.

LDL-C ("bad cholesterol") can slowly accumulate along the artery walls, making them stiffer and narrower. Because this process has no symptoms, people often don't realize their heart is working harder until a serious problem develops.
