September is Hunger Action Month - a time to come together and take action against food insecurity in the Upper Valley! 🧡

At LISTEN, that action takes many forms, from providing food through our Food Pantry and Community Dining Hall to connecting neighbors with resources and support.

Want to help? You can:

And we’ve got plenty happening at LISTEN this month.

🎃 HALLOWEEN EVENT: Starting September 18 at all three Thrift Stores! Come thrift spooky finds, costumes, décor, and more.

The LISTEN Food Pantry at 60 Hanover Street in Lebanon welcomes 60–70 visitors each weekday. Behind those numbers are people and families who are finding support when they need it most!

We recently asked visitors to share how the Pantry helps them, and their answers included:

💙 Reduced stress about food
💙 Helped us afford other bills
💙 Provided healthy food options
💙 Helped during an emergency or difficult time
💙 Made us feel supported by the community
💙 Helped feed children in the household
💙 Helped feed seniors in the household

A heartfelt thank you to the Norwich Lions Club for helping local kids experience the joy of summer camp! 💙

Because of your generosity, more children in our community had the chance to spend their summer making new friends, trying new things, and creating memories that will last long after camp ends. ☀️

When Wendy takes her grandson, Sy, to BJ’s, it’s more than a simple shopping trip - it’s an opportunity to give back. 💙 Wendy brings Sy along so he can help choose foods he thinks other kids will enjoy!

Recently, the duo donated 70 pounds of food and 20 pounds of diapers to the LISTEN Food Pantry. We love seeing young people learning the importance of community care, and we’re so grateful to both Wendy and Sy for thinking of their neighbors! 🫶

Tina’s Story 💚

Without support from LISTEN, Upper Valley resident Tina says that she would most definitely be facing homelessness right now. Instead, she has an apartment, a stable job at Dartmouth College, and a routine that helps her stay connected and on track!

Tina met Jessica—her Service Coordinator and LISTEN’s Community Health Worker—when she was struggling to manage her medications after she was diagnosed with cancer. Together, they made a schedule for Tina that helped her follow her treatment plan and feel more confident managing her care.

Jessica also resolved a major communication barrier, by providing Tina with a reliable track phone and phone plan. Now Tina is equipped to contact her doctors and employer, and reach out for assistance when she needs it.

With Jessica’s guidance, Tina was even able to access resources she didn’t know existed. When she experienced the devastating loss of her boyfriend, Tina was able to apply for funds from the town she lived in to help pay for his funeral expenses.

“Jessica is truly amazing. I can’t thank her and LISTEN enough for the help they have given me,” Tina says. “They’ve been such a great support system.”

Due to the closure of a couple of other Thrift Stores in our area and the overwhelming generosity of our community, we need to close our Donation Centers in Lebanon, White River Junction, and Canaan next week (Mon. 8/24 through Sat. 8/29). Lebanon and WRJ will reopen for donations on 8/31 and Canaan on 9/1. Our stores will remain open for shopping. Our donation and shopping hours, which are different, are posted on our website: listencs.org
