Today’s Photo of the Day honors the incredible Race Committee team who kept the 79th Annual Block Island Race running around the clock.

At the center is Ray Redniss, celebrating an amazing 29 years as Principal Race Officer. From getting nearly 60 boats cleanly off the starting line yesterday to recording finishes through 24 hours of racing, the dedication and professionalism of the Race Committee is what makes offshore racing possible.

A huge thank you to the Race Committee volunteers and for hosting.

The fleet charged off the line Friday for the start of the 79th Annual Storm Trysail Club Block Island Race, beginning the 186-nautical-mile offshore challenge from Stamford, Connecticut around Block Island and back. ⛵️🌊

In an uncommon easterly breeze making it an upwind start, the crews were hiking hard upwind, photographer Stephen Cloutier ( ) captured all the action from the opening moments offshore.

🏁 RECORD WATCH: One of the boats to watch in this year’s Block Island Race is Bryon Ehrhart’s Juan K 88 Lucky.

Fresh off the inaugural US Open Offshore Race from St. Barth’s to Newport — with Charlie Enright helming and Chris Lewis navigating — Lucky now has its sights set on the Block Island Race record of 11h 25m 01s set by Comanche in 2015.

The team also arrives after setting a new record in the 2025 RORC Transatlantic Race.

Because of Lucky’s draft, this year’s course has again been shortened by one mile for her class (class 12 only)— just as it was for Comanche’s record-setting run.

Can the record fall this weekend?

⚓ The 79th Annual Block Island Race starts Friday at 12 PM off Stamford! 69 boats will take on the iconic 186-nautical-mile offshore challenge around Block Island and back — one of the Northeast’s most historic tests of seamanship.

This year’s fleet is especially significant as 34 of the entries are also preparing for the 2026 Newport Bermuda Race (nearly a quarter of that fleet!), making Block Island a key proving ground ahead of the 636-mile offshore classic.

📈 ORC - Offshore Racing Congress continues its rapid growth with 38 ORC entries — the largest ORC Block Island Race fleet to date — alongside 31 PHRF competitors across 12 classes.

🔥 Watch for:
• Juan K 88 Lucky chasing the race record
• Competitive Double-Handed fleets
• Five J/99s
