🎉🎉🎉Today is our birthday!!! 🎉🎉🎉

ANC grew out of a "healthy communities" initiative called the Eastside Summit. This summit began as a collaborative effort between Sparrow Hospital and the Eastside Neighborhood Organization, and mobilized community members to create a "healthy community" on the Eastside. One of those members, Joan Nelson, helped facilitate the summit as many long-time Eastside neighbors joined task forces focusing on health, housing and neighborhood stability. Eventually, the Eastside Summit morphed into a non-profit organization, the Allen Neighborhood Center.

While ANC began with a focus on health and housing - with volunteer Health Navigators and Housing Ambassadors leading the way - our very first program was the Youth Service Corps, a job and life skills training for 11-17 year olds. For twenty-five years, ANC has pioneered and continues to offer programs in health education and outreach, housing improvement, food security and nutrition education, youth development, commercial corridor revitalization, and social capital building.

In 2018, ANC purchased the blighted complex that it had been housed in for the last two decades, and began the process of converting it into a comprehensive community space. This development was completed in the summer of 2022, and Allen Place was born. Allen Place is home to 21 mixed-income apartments, the Allen Community Health Center, a pharmacy, ELFCO, the Rathbun Accelerator Kitchen for aspiring food entrepreneurs, and of course, Allen Neighborhood Center.

Over 1500 volunteers contribute over 10,000 hours every year to make this work possible. Volunteers are our community leaders—the front line people who make the health and connectivity of the neighborhood a personal commitment. They help create an environment that supports shared responsibility for our children, elders, families, and neighborhood groups. Together, we are building a more vibrant Eastside.

A HUGE thank you to our longtime supporters at Jackson for coming to our GardenHouse and helping us with the field! Thanks to their hard work, the entire production field is weeded; a truly herculean task given the size of this field.

Our work wouldn't be possible without the support of our community, and we're so grateful to Jackson for showing up time and time again for us 😍

Happy Juneteenth Eastside! Allen Neighborhood Center will be closed today to celebrate the holiday, and encourage our neighbors to explore all the different events taking place in Lansing, not only today, but the whole weekend (see below for link to many events).

The day serves not only as a reminder of emancipation but also as a time to honor African American culture and history, reflect on ongoing struggles for equality, and promote unity. It stands as a powerful reminder of the long and difficult road to freedom for African Americans and the enduring spirit of resistance and hope that defines their history.

Today, we want to spotlight a very generous neighbor, Dr. Willie D. Davis Jr. (Babakubwa Kweku), who has given the Eastside a great community resource through his All Around the African World Museum, located in Potter-Walsh! The mission of this museum is to provide citizens of the United States and the world evidence of the presence of people of African descent in the history and development of the world and their contributions to the world's continents. He has also been kind enough to educate our community at our Holiday Market (pictured here).

One last reminder that we're hiring a Volunteer & Communications Coordinator!

The Volunteer & Communications Coordinator will play a hybrid role that blends relationship-building with storytelling. At its core, this position is about connecting people to ANC’s mission –both by bringing volunteers into the organization and by shaping how ANC presents itself to the externally. The ideal candidate will be passionate and energetic, but also a thoughtful communicator who can flex their communication style for different types of audiences.

On the volunteer side, the coordinator will help translate interest into meaningful involvement by recruiting both individuals and groups, guiding them through onboarding, and ensuring they feel prepared and valued. The coordinator serves as a central figure in maintaining a sense of community among volunteers, tracking their contributions, and recognizing their impact in a way that reinforces their connection to ANC’s mission.

At the same time, the communications aspect of the role focuses on telling the organization’s story in a clear and compelling way that is consistent in tone. The coordinator will develop content for newsletters, social media, ANC’s website, and outreach campaigns, translating day-to-day activities into narratives that resonate with donors, partners, and our neighbors.

⚠️Fall Veggie Box is OPEN!!!!!!⚠️

Veggie Box is more than just a subscription to local food; it's a movement.
Our goal is to create a more holistic and resilient community that prioritizes local. With two decades of experience working alongside and supporting farmers, our multi-farm CSA is able to source the best in-season produce that mid-Michigan has to offer.

We strive to have long-term impacts on mid-Michigan's food system: substantial economic benefits for local farmers and food producers, and hundreds of people who have access to nutritionally-dense, local food. But even more than this, we hope to nurture a sense of place and belonging between both members and suppliers. Food is powerful. It brings us together, shapes our memories, and empowers our communities. Growing and sharing food creates an important bond, giving us opportunities to connect with one another.

After a lot of hard work, the inside of our Hunter Park GardenHouse is officially planted! 🌱🍅🌶️🍆🌼

We've finished planting tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, peppers, and flowers throughout our indoor growing spaces. Now it's time to water, care for them, and watch the GardenHouse come to life this summer 😍😍😍
