MDOT is hosting an open house in our Greatroom to discuss the planned rebuilding and realigning of a portion of US-127 from I-496 to south of Lake Lansing Road beginning in spring 2027. Construction will address improved roadway geometrics, vehicular movement and safety concerns. In addition to pavement repairs, this project will improve bridges through this corridor as well as upgrade drainage, signs, intelligent transportation systems and pavement markings.

This open house is taking place in our Greatroom on Thursday, June 4th, from 5:00-7:00 PM. See you there!

We're hiring a Volunteer & Communications Coordinator!

The Volunteer & Communications Coordinator will play a hybrid role that blends relationship-building with storytelling. At its core, this position is about connecting people to ANC’s mission –both by bringing volunteers into the organization and by shaping how ANC presents itself to the externally. The ideal candidate will be passionate and energetic, but also a thoughtful communicator who can flex their communication style for different types of audiences.

On the volunteer side, the coordinator will help translate interest into meaningful involvement by recruiting both individuals and groups, guiding them through onboarding, and ensuring they feel prepared and valued. The coordinator serves as a central figure in maintaining a sense of community among volunteers, tracking their contributions, and recognizing their impact in a way that reinforces their connection to ANC’s mission.

At the same time, the communications aspect of the role focuses on telling the organization’s story in a clear and compelling way that is consistent in tone. The coordinator will develop content for newsletters, social media, ANC’s website, and outreach campaigns, translating day-to-day activities into narratives that resonate with donors, partners, and our neighbors.

Apply by July 3rd; details at the link below!

As we wrap up our first two outdoor markets of the season, it's worth reminding ourselves why our Allen Farmers Market feels so special.

The market is for and by our Eastside neighborhood, which is full of friendly, caring people who make an afternoon with them a joy. At our market, while there is plenty of delicious produce, there is even more community, conversation, and laughter. Running into your neighbor isn't an accident, but a feature of a market that started with the community at its center.

We're so incredibly lucky to live in this neighborhood, and we wouldn't trade it for the world ❤

Shout out to one of our amazing volunteers, Brian, who took these wonderful pictures capturing the spirit of the market! You can see even more of his amazing pictures at www.flickr.com/people/bmkeillor/

Only one week left to apply for our Generational Programs Manager position!

The Generational Programs Manager will be a member of the Outreach & Engagement Team, and will provide age-specific educational and social programming in the neighborhood. Specifically, the Manager will oversee the following programs:
The Senior Discovery Group has been meeting every Wednesday for the last 25 years for ‘pretty good coffee and great conversation.' This program offers weekly enrichment for seniors with both educational and social programming, as well as snacks and guest presenters. Activities range from: international guest speakers from Michigan State University; elected officials presenting updates and receiving feedback; estate planning; bocce ball; crafts; age friendly yoga, and more.

Youth Service Corps (YSC) is a community-driven, youth-led job and life skill development program for neighbors between the ages of 11-17. YSC was Allen Neighborhood Center’s very first program back in 1999 and grew out a four-year-old ‘healthy communities’ initiative that mobilized neighbors to create a more vibrant community on Lansing’s Eastside.

Take Root Garden Club is a curriculum-based gardening and nutrition education program for youth ages 5-10. Offered as a collaborative partnership with Lansing Parks & Recreation, Take Root Garden Club is hosted at Foster Community Center, only a few blocks away from ANC. A combination of hands-on and assessment-based learning guides the city’s youngest neighbors through topics related to health, nutrition, native plants, and urban gardening.

Visit bit.ly/anc-jobs to learn more information; applications are due June 4th.

Our Hunter Park GardenHouse needs volunteers!

Developed out of an area that was once a garbage dump and gravel pit, our Hunter Park GardenHouse is a neighborhood-based educational farm and community garden. The GardenHouse centers programming in three areas: home gardening education for all ages, fresh food access, and urban ecological restoration. Projects include a robust workshop series, the Urban Gardener Certificate Course, a free-to-all community garden and orchard called Edible Park, produce grown for donation, native wildflower demonstration gardens, and more.

This project is only possible because of the incredible support we've gotten through our neighborhood, with volunteers contributing 2000 hours of support every year since 2023. Come join the wonderful community making the Eastside beautiful and full of free produce!

Shifts are on Mondays from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM or Thursdays from 4:00-6:00 PM. Click on the link below to sign up to volunteer!

Today is the SEED FESTIVAL!!!

You'll be able to choose from hundreds of free seed packets and build your own garden! Soil, seeds, and pots will be available at no cost, while we have a big handful of vendors that have plant starts for purchase! International dancer and Eastside neighbor Nic Gareiss will be dancing right at 3pm and you do not want to miss it! Paint a terracotta pot, plant some seeds, grab dinner and enjoy the show!

As a reminder, our Allen Farmers Market runs every Wednesday from 3:00-6:30 PM. See you there!

We had a wonderful Maker Dinner! Our neighbors were served some delicious food and got to meet the extremely talented Makers in our Incubator Kitchen Program. While the food is always spectacular, the best part is spending an evening with our wonderful community ❤
