Hunter Park GardenHouse Year-round farm and gardening education center on Lansing's Eastside. We are open 5 days a week, and offer a wide assortment of programs.

The Hunter Park GardenHouse, a project of Allen Neighborhood Center, serves as a demonstration site and hub for year-round garden education, where neighbors volunteer to grow food, flowers, and community, and youth develop job and life skills in service to the neighborhood. Since 2008, the Hunter Park GardenHouse has empowered neighbors to grow, prepare, and eat healthy food to better their health

and become better connected with the community. Our current programs include:

Garden Education Workshops & Services
Gardening Workshops- a full menu of year-round gardening workshop options. Urban Gardener Certification Course, a multi-session course teaching a variety of skills including planting food crops, designing home gardens, seed starting, composting, and soil science. GardenHouse Products
In effort to become financially sustainable, we are expanding our selection of products and services for sale, in which money raised will benefit our charitable programs, allowing us to provide services and programs for neighbors who can’t afford to pay. Our main annual fundraiser include a spring plant sale of vegetable and herb starts, a fall native plant sale, and regular produce sales through the Allen Neighborhood Center’s Veggie Box program. Growing Food
We grow and sell produce through a Multi-Season, multi-grower CSA- The Allen Neighborhood a Center Veggie Box. Youth Programs
Take Root Garden Club- a youth program for ages 5-10, focusing on nutrition and fitness education through gardening. Youth Service Corps- a job and life skills training program for youth ages 11-17, in which youth participate in service-learning projects focusing on food access: Garden-in-a-Box, Edible Park, Park Cart, and Fruit Tree Project.

Looking for a way to connect with your community, learn about gardening, and help grow fresh food for our neighbors? Join us as a volunteer at Hunter Park GardenHouse!

Volunteer shifts are:
Mondays: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Thursdays: 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Tasks may include weeding, planting, harvesting, mulching, general garden maintenance, and helping keep our community garden thriving. No experience is necessary, just bring a willingness to learn and get your hands dirty!

One of the most important steps after harvesting garlic is curing it. Curing allows the outer skins to dry, seals the neck of the bulb, and helps your garlic store for months.

Here's how we cure ours: Gently brush off excess dirt,don't wash the bulbs. Hang them in bundles or lay them in a single layer in a shady, dry, well-ventilated space. Keep them out of direct sunlight. Let them cure for about 2–4 weeks, until the leaves are completely dry and the papery skins have formed.

Once cured, trim the roots and cut the stalks (or leave them long if you want to braid softneck varieties). Store your garlic in a cool, dry place with good airflow,not in the refrigerator.

Growing garlic is one of my favorite "lazy gardener" crops. Plant it once in the fall, give it a little care, and months later you'll have flavorful bulbs that can last well into winter when they're cured and stored properly.

Neighbors, we need your help!

In May, the Hunter Park GardenHouse experienced a heartbreaking setback when our sheds were broken into and many of our tools were stolen.

The timing couldn't have been worse. Spring and summer are our busiest seasons; the time when we're growing food, hosting volunteers, teaching workshops, maintaining the Edible Park, and caring for spaces that are open and accessible to our community. We've been doing our best to keep moving forward, but the reality is that losing these tools has made our work significantly more difficult.

Reciprocity is at the heart of everything Allen Neighborhood Center does. This work has always been about bringing our neighbors together to help care for both the land and one another. In fact, we couldn't do much of what we do without the support of this wonderful community. Every garden bed weeded, every workshop taught, every volunteer welcomed, and every pound of food harvested is possible because of people like you who believe in this work.

When the GardenHouse thrives, our whole community benefits. When we experience a setback like this, we lean on one another to help us recover. We're currently fundraising to replace stolen tools and equipment so we can continue serving our neighborhood. 🌱 The Hunter Park GardenHouse U-Pick Garden is starting to rev up!

Fresh, free produce and herbs are beginning to come in, and we're excited to share them with our community.

Ready to Harvest:

• Sage

As you harvest, please be respectful of the space and leave some for others to enjoy. Our goal is to make fresh food accessible to as many neighbors as possible.
