✨Remember when summer nights seemed to be filled with fireflies?✨

Many people say they don't see as many fireflies as they used to. While there are several reasons for their decline, one of the simplest ways we can help is by reducing artificial light at night.

💡 Fireflies use their flashes to communicate and find mates. Artificial light can drown out those signals, making it harder for them to court one another and reproduce.

Fireflies are active in Wisconsin from May through August, with peak season from mid-June through late July.

Lights Out Wisconsin is encouraging everyone to turn off or dim non-essential outdoor lights and close window shades from sunset to sunrise. You can also help by:
🍂 Leaving the leaves
🚫 Avoiding pesticides
🌿 Keeping some natural areas in your yard

Have you seen any fireflies yet this year? Let us know in the comments! ✨

Friends of Korth Park recently hosted Jefferson County Head Start for nature themed activities. They read stories, sang, danced and planted native wildflowers at the new park sign. Thanks to Friends of Korth Park environmental educators, Jefferson County Parks and the staff and students for adding beauty and wildlife habitat.
