Kern River Valley Heritage Foundation

Kern River Valley Heritage Foundation Since the conception of the Kern River Valley Heritage Foundation in May of 2000 we have taken stewardship of nearly 4,000 acres.

Our foundation's goal is to protect the natural, scenic, agricultural and historic lands of the Kern River Valley through stewardship, restoration and education. Starting with the protection, stewardship and development of the Bob Powers Gateway Preserve. A 19 acre preserve where we have developed two seasonal wetland ponds that are enjoyed by many different species of waterfowl. Also at the Bob P

owers Preserve, we have been monitoring and protecting the Alkali Mariposa Lily, a plant of special concern. Acquisition of the Hot Springs Valley Wetlands, a 189 acre preserve adjacent to the Bob Powers Gateway Preserve was accomplished in January of 2017. This preserve offers us opportunities to conserve and protect many natural features and historic activities. The protection and enhancement of the wetlands, the continued cattle grazing and the recent addition of a multi-use path for the community to enjoy are just a sampling of our efforts on this unique landscape. Our Brown Flat Ecological Preserve was acquired in June of 2019. This open space of over 250 acres will offer us opportunities of wildlife habitat enhancement and cattle grazing with a appropriate management plan. In June of 2020 we celebrated the acquisition of our Hanning Flat Preserve. This 3,000 acre preserve is rich with history dating back to Native Americans living throughout the valley and more recent ranchers, who grazed this natural spring fed landscape.

It’s expected that this growing family of burrowing owls will start to spread out to nearby burrows. It’s hard not to wonder if the early morning skunk visit to the “nest burrow” (Set #12) was a factor in the timing. The owl pictures were taken by another cellular camera from Burrow Set #13, just to the N of Set #12.
