FYDO: New Non- Profit Formed in the Kern River Valley to Help Dogs and their Families
Wendy Geis and Kate MacDonald are thrilled to announce the formation of a new Non-Profit corporation: FYDO: the Fix Your Dog Org.; to help the Kern River Valley with the growing problem of dog overpopulation. You might already know of us through our Facebook posts and our Facebook group Terriertown. We’ve already
been helping hundreds of dogs in the KRV since 2011. Overpopulation -too many dogs, not enough good homes- leads to roaming and stray dogs, which can become a public health hazard. Too many dogs without homes also leads to the tragic fact that Kern County’s shelters are putting down, or euthanizing, more than sixteen thousand healthy dogs each year.http://www.co.kern.ca.us/acd/pdfs/MonthlyReports/MonthlyReport112.pdf . Most well intentioned people who rescue a dog from a busy road, or “drop off” a stray dog to the shelter don’t know that half of them are killed.http://www.co.kern.ca.us/acd/pdfs/MonthlyReports/MonthlyReport117.pdf )for lack of good homes. The best answer we have right now to this heartbreaking problem is SPAY and NEUTER. By “fixing” pups before they reach breeding age, as well as older dogs that have not been fixed, the number of unwanted dogs will diminish each year. We will transport dogs of low income families to the clinics in Bakersfield for FREE or LOW COST spay and neuter. Valley residents will be able to drop off their pups or dogs at a centralized location. FYDO will transport them to either 4 PAWS or Critters Without Litters. We’ll pick them up and bring them back to the drop off point; complete with Rabies (and other if applicable) vaccines. We have a van and are ready to rock! Along with spay and neuter, we will offer assistance to the Kern River Valley’s residents by helping re-home dogs whose owners have died, relocated or are otherwise unable to care for a family pet; We will help rescue dogs in dire circumstances, offering foster homes.
