🐐🐮🐷If you are newer to the livestock world, you may have heard the term “jackpot show” and wondered how that differs from events like the Kern County Fair or our local FFA chapter shows.
Jackpot shows are separate from FFA chapter events and function much like a competitive sports season for livestock kids. These are open shows held throughout the year and often across the state. They give exhibitors more time in the ring, exposure to different judges, and the opportunity to compete against a wide range of youth. Jackpoting takes commitment. Practice, travel, conditioning animals, and weekends on the road all become part of the routine.
Events like the Kern County Fair and official FFA chapter shows are structured around the FFA program. They focus on supervised projects, record books, and awards tied directly to the chapter and fair system. Both experiences matter, and many students benefit from participating in both.
One of the most important pieces of the jackpot world is parent involvement and volunteerism. Just like club sports, this side of livestock showing runs on families stepping up. Hauling trailers, washing animals, setting pens, helping at ringside, loading and unloading, and supporting other kids all take time and teamwork. These opportunities do not exist without parents and volunteers willing to show up and pitch in.
We are incredibly proud of the KV FFA members who have been traveling and competing at jackpot shows this season. Our local kids have been representing Kern Valley while showing pigs, goats, rabbits, and steers, gaining experience, confidence, and friendships that extend far beyond the show ring.
If your child has participated in jackpot shows this year, we would love to see it.
Please drop a photo in the comments and help us celebrate the hard work, dedication, and community behind these kids.
If this is something your family may be interested in, come see us at the next Booster meeting… we’d love to help!
KV FFA is showing up, and it shows. 💙💛
