All roads and trails in Sequoia National Forest and surrounding BLM lands are closed until further notice for public safety due to heavy flooding, potential flash floods and to prevent creating ruts by driving on roads and trails.
Two weeks ago Stewards urged everyone not to ride on the trails until they dry out so as not to tear them up and create ruts that wreck the trails.
It is now illegal to ride roads or trails and even be on public lands. Please respect the closures to prevent damaging your roads and trails. It is so wet there are mushrooms growing on south facing hillsides.
There may not be closure signs at all trailheads, but they should not be ridden. These closures may be in effect for a while due to the ground being saturated. Be aware you can be fined up to $5000 and go to jail for 6 months.

Stewards Executive Director met with the Forest Service today to discuss how they could resolve our objections to their revised Sequoia Forest Plan.

No answers were provided, so we will have to wait to see if they will eliminate their one mile wide PCT management area and address our other concerns.

Turns out it has long been known how to prevent mega fires and create healthy forests, but policy makers and extreme groups like the Sierra Club continue to block them

All California National Forests Temporarily Closed Until September 17

“We do not take this decision lightly but this is the best choice for public safety,” said Regional Forester Jennifer Eberlien. “It is especially hard with the approaching Labor Day weekend, when so many people enjoy our national forests.”

The Forest Service is concerned with public safety and about preventing new wildfires while they have little or no capacity to respond to more fires with all crews engaged in existing fires. You can read their detailed forest order here-

Here is a glimpse of the devastation in the French Fire. Just Outstanding trail was one of the top 100 single tracks in California. So much beauty gone, so much habitat destroyed. It did not have to be like this If extreme groups like the Sequoia Forest Keepers had not prevented much needed forest wide thinning.

Stewards Plants Trees After Castle Fire

On May 1st the Forest Service invited Stewards of the Sequoia volunteers to plant trees helping speed reforestation in the Castle Fire burn area.

Eight Stewards volunteers spent the day digging in the parched earth to plant over 100 seedlings along Route 190 just east of Camp Nelson mountainous region.

Sadly it will take many centuries if ever for this forest to recover.

Many thanks to Sequoia National Forest staffers Steven and Wendy for hosting the tree planting and to the Springville Forest Fire Crew for going out and watering the seedlings.
