What a wonderful message from our August guest speaker, **Lenita Turner!**

Sharing her own journey through education, leadership, entrepreneurship and community service, Lenita reminded us that a successful career doesn't always follow a straight path. Sometimes the unexpected opportunities, challenges and even closed doors are preparing us for what's next.

A few of the lessons she shared with us:

• **Allow yourself to evolve.** The dream can change without the journey being a failure.
• **Don't wait until you feel completely ready.** Sometimes the opportunity is what develops you.
• **Know your value.** Don't shrink yourself to make others comfortable.
• **Protect what matters.** Every opportunity doesn't require a “yes.”
• **Build relationships before you need them.** Your network is also made up of people who know your character and your work.
• **Bring another woman with you.** When you have influence, use it to create opportunities for someone else.

Perhaps one of the most fitting messages for Connections was Lenita's reminder to **“hold the door open for the woman coming behind you.”**

We were honored to welcome Lafayette Parish Councilwoman Liz Webb Hebert as guest speaker at our July luncheon!

Liz shared her journey from hospitality and event work to public service, along with the experiences that inspired her to run for office. She spoke about the importance of hard work, visibility, accessibility, and staying connected to the people she serves.

Thank you, Liz, for sharing your story, your passion for our community, and your commitment to making Lafayette a better place to live and work!

🎓 Congratulations to our 2026 Connections Scholarship recipient, Sherissa Thompson!

Sherissa has returned to college to pursue her degree in Adult Education Administration while continuing her work in student affairs and scholarships at a local community college. A devoted grandmother and self-proclaimed “granny taxi,” she beautifully represents the determination, heart and commitment of women returning to school while balancing work and family.

In a wonderful full-circle moment, Sherissa has also offered to share her experience and help Connections with future scholarship awards!

This scholarship is presented annually to a mature female student returning to school and managing the cost of tuition and other educational expenses. It is funded through the 50/50 raffle held at each Connections luncheon, and sometimes, through the generosity of raffle winners who donate their winnings back to the fund.

Thank you to everyone who participates in our raffles and helps us continue supporting women like Sherissa as they pursue their goals.
Congratulations, Sherissa! We are proud to be a small part of your journey! đź’™

Connections women leading throughout Acadiana!

We are proud to congratulate Nanette Soileau Heggie, a past president of Connections, on being named President of the Acadiana Center for the Arts Board of Directors.

We are equally excited to recognize our current Connections president, Mary Guidry, who has been appointed to serve on the AcA Board of Directors.

Nanette and Mary exemplify the leadership, service and community involvement that are at the heart of Connections. We are proud to see two of our own helping advance the arts and enrich our Acadiana community. Congratulations to you both!
