Last week, we had the opportunity to participate in the Inland Deserts Catalyst Convening, hosted by the California Governor’s Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation (LCI) and the California Strategic Growth Council (SGC) in Palm Springs.

Along with fellow community leaders, scientists, and state representatives, we discussed a wide range of topics for our state's 5th Climate Assessment. Our team joined the Climate & Community Resilience and Meaningful & Equitable Engagement groups to identify gaps and potential solutions for both topics.

The day was filled with great discussions and presentations for our region. And while it’s hard to summarize all of it, we would like to share the following note included in Dr. Francesca Hopkins' presentation;

Join us to learn about fire ecology and celebrate the 26th anniversary of the Santa Rosa San Jacinto National Monument.

We will be joined by local researcher Dr. Lynn Sweet from UCR's Center for Conservation Biology, who will speak about fire's role in the Southern California mountains. We will be heading up Hwy 74 to visit areas affected by recent fires and help collect data on fire-following species🌼

🥪 Lunch, drinks, and snacks provided
🚸 Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Be sure to pack ⤵️
💧 2 liters of water per person
👟 Comfortable sneakers or hiking boots
☀️ Hat and sunglasses
🎒 Camera and any prescription medications you may need.

It’s always so great to see how nature inspires our community and provides a peaceful space for everyone ☀️

Earlier this month, we teamed up with local artist Aidan Koch for a relaxing morning filled with creativity. Through guided activities, participants explored, interpreted, and connected with one another through artwork and reflective journaling about the surrounding desert landscape.

Thanks to everyone who joined us, and to our friends at Big Morongo Canyon Preserve for welcoming our group and providing the perfect setting for this event!

“The park has done a really good job of using the science and the modeling to prioritize restoration and to do seed collection in the places that are most at risk, and to do fire abatement in the places that are most at risk,” said Colin Barrows. “And all of those jobs are the exact contracts that just got cut.”

Did you know Joshua Tree National Park is the most impacted national park nationwide after the Department of the Interior disapproved ten of its National Park Service agreements? These ten agreements represent $1.2 million in blocked federal funding for critical tasks that would have enhanced management of endangered species, cultural and natural resources, plus restoration of burned areas and historic preservation. These ten agreements also represented jobs and opportunities for our local youth, early-career workers, and veterans.
