Kodiak Area Native Association - KANA To Elevate the Quality of Life of the People We Serve The primary focus of the organization is meeting the expressed needs of our beneficiaries.

The Kodiak Area Native Association was formed in 1966 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation providing health and social services for the Alaska Natives of the Koniag region. KANA provides these services on behalf of the United States Government through compacts with the Indian Health Service (IHS) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), in each case pursuant to the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975 (the ISDEAA). KANA’s service area includes the City of Kodiak and 6 remote Alaska Native villages: Akhiok, Karluk, Larsen Bay, Old Harbor, Ouzinkie and Port Lions and encompasses 10 federally recognized Tribes of Kodiak Island. From the date of incorporation, KANA has been governed by a Board of Directors with varying representation from each of the villages, including one representative for the “at large” Native population on Kodiak Island. Services provided by KANA include, but are not limited to: Ambulatory Medical Clinic, Dental Clinic, Pharmacy, Community Health Aide Program, Substance Abuse Prevention, Intervention and Outreach, Social Services, Mental Health, and Youth Prevention Projects. Other services, provided by State of Alaska and other funding sources, include but are not limited to: Vocational Rehabilitation, Employment and Training, Childcare and Education Assistance Services, Economic Development, Public Safety, Elder Support Programs, Emergency Medical Services, WIC Nutrition Services, and Infant Learning.

Last Friday staff across KANA showed their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month during the annual Wear Pink Day! 🩷

Did you know? Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in the United States during their lifetime. Thanks to increased awareness, early detection, and advancements in treatment, deaths from breast cancer have dropped by 44% since 1989.

Early detection saves lives and your KANA Medical Care Team is here to help. As we close out October, consider scheduling an appointment with your provider to talk through screening options and encourage your loved ones to do the same. Together we're standing strong against breast cancer.

Atagua! We're incredibly proud to celebrate Dr. Elise Pletnikoff, KANA's Chief Medical Officer, as she receives the 2026 Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) President's Award for Health!

A Sun’aq/Unangan physician from Kodiak, following medical school and residency, Dr. Pletnikoff deliberately returned home in 2013 to care for her community. More than a decade later, her dedication to improving the health and well-being of our people has earned statewide recognition. Nominated by the Native Village of Afognak and Tangirnaq Native Village, Elise is being honored for her contributions to Alaska Native health.

Her story is a wonderful example of what it means to come home, give back, and make a lasting difference in the community you call home. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Pletnikoff on this well-deserved honor!
