The Humane Society of Kodiak has operated the only animal shelter for the entire Kodiak Archipelago since 1995.

The Humane Society of Kodiak has been contracted by the City of Kodiak to operate the Kodiak Animal Shelter since 1995, changing it to a “No Kill” shelter for friendly, adoptable animals in 1997 thanks to community support. It is solely through memberships, fundraising, and donations that we are able to spay/neuter and provide other veterinary care for the animals awaiting adoption. We are not members of, nor are we formally affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States or the American Humane Society. We have our own bylaws and mission statement and operate independently to service Kodiak Island in its entirety, including the city, Borough, Villages, and the Coast Guard Base. Our focus and the point to our fundraising is to prevent the cruelty of animals through education and by promoting responsible pet ownership, reducing the population of abandoned pets through spay/neuter programs and to promote the proper care of animals impounded at the shelter. If you have an after-hours emergency, please call the Kodiak Police Department (KPD) at (907) 486-8000. If you have a found or surrendered animal, you may leave it in the drop-off hut after hours, but please leave us with information on the form provided in the hut and please call KPD to notify them of the pet.

Some embraced their fruity alter egos. Others are clearly plotting revenge.
One thing's for sure, these bananas are ripe for the picking! ❤️🐾

P.S. No bananas were harmed in the making of these photos. A few egos, however, may never recover. 😂

Pet of the week
Pixel: 1 yr old, Yorkie/Shih Tzu mix

Pixel, a little dog with a BIG personality, absolutely no filter, and enough opinions to fill a town hall meeting.

Some might call him grouchy. Others might say he suffers from a classic case of little dog syndrome. We prefer to think of him as a distinguished gentleman with strong boundaries and a very active complaint department.

Let's discuss Pixel's interests.

🌱 GRASS. Loves it. Put this little guy in a patch of grass, and he's perfectly content. Sometimes the simple things really are the best.

🧸 TOYS. He's seen them. He's considered them. He's decided they're a waste of his valuable time.

🗣️ CONVERSATION. Pixel has LOTS to say, and he's not particularly concerned about whether anyone asked for his opinion. Barking, grumbling, and announcing his presence are among his specialties.

👥 PEOPLE. Believe it or not, Pixel actually likes people! He just prefers to get to know them before handing over his friendship. He's cautious at first, but that's his version of conducting a background check.

Now, let's address a few of his quirks.

First impressions are not his specialty. Pixel does NOT show his best side in his kennel. He's vocal, opinionated, and occasionally puts on a performance worthy of a dramatic television series. We encourage potential adopters to meet him outside his kennel before making any judgments.

He has some possessive tendencies. Pixel will occasionally resource guard, particularly with certain people. He'll need an understanding, experienced owner who recognizes this behavior and can work with him using patience and positive reinforcement.

🐕 OTHER DOGS. Pixel has opinions about them, too. He tends to bark and growl at other dogs, and larger dogs may actually intimidate him. He's not exactly begging for a canine roommate.

🐈 CATS. Surprisingly, Pixel has no objections. Apparently, even he has limits to his complaints.

👶 CHILDREN. Hard pass. Pixel would prefer an adult-only household where his personal space is respected and nobody expects him to participate in a game of dress-up.

So, what kind of home does this tiny dictator need?

One with patience, understanding, a sense of humor, and preferably some grass. Someone who doesn't expect a perfectly behaved, endlessly affectionate little lapdog. Someone who appreciates personality, even when that personality occasionally resembles a grouchy old man yelling at the neighborhood kids.

Pixel isn't everyone's cup of tea.

He's more like a tiny, slightly bitter espresso. Strong, occasionally unpleasant, but absolutely delightful to the right person. ☕

And somewhere out there is someone who will look at this opinionated little face, listen to his unsolicited complaints, and think...Yep. That's my dog.

Pixel may not win any popularity contests, but he doesn't need to.
He just needs ONE person who loves him exactly as he is, quirks, grumbles, and all.

Not every dog is sunshine and rainbows. Some are tiny storm clouds with four legs. And those dogs deserve loving homes, too.

Brodie: 6 yr old, Australian Shepherd

**BRODY HERE! PART-TIME GENIUS, FULL-TIME CHAOS COORDINATOR!**

The name's Brody. I'm an Australian Shepherd, which means I'm ridiculously smart, ridiculously handsome, and occasionally ridiculously ridiculous. I've got a big personality, a busy brain, and some very specific opinions about how life should be lived.

First, let's discuss my hobbies.

💦 **WATER!** Love it. Can't get enough.

🪵 **STICKS!** And I'm not talking about those sad little twigs. I want BIG sticks. The kind that make you question whether I'm actually a dog or a lumberjack.

🎾 **BALLS!** I take fetch very seriously. Possibly too seriously. I've been told I can get a little obsessed. I prefer the term *dedicated professional.*

🏃 **CHASE!** If we're playing chase, I'm in! Let's go!

Now, before you fall hopelessly in love with me (understandable), there are a few things you should know.

I'm a sensitive guy. I pick up on the emotions of the people around me, and sometimes the world feels a little overwhelming. Meeting new people can make me nervous, and when I get REALLY excited, my enthusiasm occasionally gets ahead of my manners. I might jump up or get a little mouthy. I'm working with a whole lot of feelings in one furry body!

I'm smart, though! I already know several commands, and with someone who understands how my Aussie brain works, I've got plenty of potential.

Here's my dream home:

🏡 **Room to breathe!** Small apartments and tight spaces aren't really my thing. I can get territorial, so a larger home with a yard would suit me much better.

🐕 The right dog friends! I can do well with well-socialized dogs, but if you're a boy dog, you need to be neutered! Otherwise, I might decide we need to establish who's in charge, and things can get ugly. Proper introductions are important.

👨‍👩‍👧 **Grown-up company, please!** No young children for me. I prefer the adult life, where people understand personal space, big feelings, and the occasional questionable decision.

❤️ **Someone who gets me!** I'm looking for an experienced, patient family who understands herding breeds, anxiety, and the fact that not every dog arrives with perfect manners.

I'm not looking for someone to change everything about me. I'm looking for someone who understands me, helps me manage my excitement, builds my confidence, and gives me a chance to be the incredible dog I know I can be.

Because underneath all that energy, excitement, and occasional chaos is a friendly, clever boy who just needs the right people.

So, what do you say? Got a yard, some patience, and a stick the size of a small tree?

Bayanetta: 5 yr old, Pit mix
Bayanetta: 100% Personality, 0% Chill!

Ever met a dog whose brain has 47 tabs open, three are playing music, and nobody knows where the tennis ball went? That's Bayanetta!

This goofy, high-energy girl approaches life with enthusiasm, curiosity, and the attention span of a goldfish at a fireworks show. She's playful, entertaining, and always ready for her next adventure, even if she hasn't quite figured out what that adventure is yet!

Bayanetta loves her toys, enjoys a good chew session, and has enough personality to keep you laughing. She's also incredibly smart and a quick learner, making her surprisingly easy to train when all that brainpower is pointed in the right direction! She's looking for an active, patient person who can help channel all that enthusiasm into positive activities while continuing to work on her leash manners.

This spirited lady prefers to be the one and only pet in her kingdom. She can be protective of her kennel space and isn't shy about using her voice, so meeting her outside her kennel is the best way to get acquainted.

Bayanetta might not be everyone's idea of the perfect dog, but perfect is overrated! She's a lovable whirlwind of goofiness, energy, and big feelings who just needs someone willing to embrace her unique personality.

❤️ Life with Bayanetta probably won't be boring, but we have a feeling it'll be full of laughs!

**PENDING ADOPTION**
Roscoe: 11 yr old, Lab mix
Roscoe is a distinguished older gentleman who knows what he likes, and isn't shy about expressing himself! At approximately 11 years old, he's got a little gray around the muzzle, plenty of personality, and absolutely no plans to spend his golden years sitting around doing nothing.

This spirited senior enjoys his walks, loves a good game of fetch, and still has plenty of pep in his step! He can be a little reserved when meeting new people (prefers children over the age 12), but once you've earned his trust, his friendly, playful side comes shining through.

Roscoe knows his basic commands, seems to get along well with other dogs, and would likely enjoy a home with older children.

He may be a senior, but nobody told Roscoe he's supposed to act his age! He's just looking for someone who appreciates a gentleman with a little mileage, a lot of character, and plenty of life left to enjoy!

🍪 For the humans: Cookies, brownies, cupcakes, breads, and all those irresistible goodies that make people forget about their diets!

🐕 For the pups: Homemade dog biscuits, pupcakes, and other dog-friendly treats that'll have tails wagging!

👩‍🍳 Not a professional baker? No problem! If you can follow a recipe and operate an oven without calling the fire department, you're qualified! 🤣

Every batch donated helps us raise funds to care for Kodiak's shelter animals. 🐾❤️
