What is the Kodiak Short Trail project?
The Kodiak Short Trail (KST) is a proposed multi-use, non-motorized trail that would make it safer for walkers, runners, and bikers to travel between Kodiak, the Coast Guard base and Bells Flats community.
Why should you care?
Currently, walkers, runners, and bikers have to use the narrow shoulder of Rezanof, a highway with posted speeds of 55mph.
Kodiak Short Trail would:
- Improve safety
- Provide a safe alternative route for commuting to and out of town.
- Connect neighborhoods and community destinations
- Create more opportunities for recreation, exercise and enjoying Kodiak’s natural surroundings.
Ok, got it - KST, now what is STIP?
STIP stands for Statewide Transportation Improvement Program. It’s the state of Alaska’s plan for transportation projects over a four year period.
KST is included in the draft for 2027-2030. Being listed in the draft plan is an important step but does not mean it’s guaranteed. They need to hear from YOU and why this would be important for our island.
