🎬 Media Review Monday: Sound of Freedom

If you've seen Sound of Freedom, you probably know the story: children are abducted, a determined hero sets out to find them, and a dramatic rescue unfolds.

The movie brought a lot of attention to the issue of human trafficking, and told an important story, but we want to be sure our community understands what the reality looks like here in East Tennessee. It doesn't always look like a dramatic international rescue operation. It can happen in our own communities, and it can involve manipulation, exploitation, and people the victim knows and trusts.

In this week's Media Review Monday, we're taking a closer look at Sound of Freedom and asking:

🎥 What does the movie get right?
🔎 What does it leave out?
⚠️ How can the "kidnapping and rescue" narrative shape the way we understand trafficking?
💜 And why is it important to make sure the real experiences of survivors aren't lost in the story?

🐾 Happy National Dog Day! 🐾

We may be a little biased, but we think some of the best members of the CCAHT team have four paws.

Through the Human-Animal Bond in Tennessee (HABIT) program at UT, therapy dogs visit our Emergency Receiving Center regularly - bringing plenty of tail wags, cuddles, and unconditional love along with them. Sometimes a little time with a furry friend is exactly what you need to brighten your day.

And because we know you want to know: yes, we absolutely consider belly rubs part of the job description.

🎬 Media Review Monday is back!

For our second installment, we're stepping out of the movie theater and into a music video with “She Will Be Free” by Josh Abbott Band.

While the song itslef isn't explicitly about trafficking, the music video is where the story of a survivor comes to life, and was created specifically to raise awareness about human trafficking.

This week Trish Richardson, our Group Curriculum Facilitator will walk us through:

🎥 How trafficking is portrayed
🔎 What the video gets right
⚠️ Where media portrayals can oversimplify the realities of trafficking
💜 And why the way we tell these stories matters

Ending human trafficking takes all of us, and our partnership with the Branch House Family Center is a powerful example of what collaboration can look like in action.

Branch House coordinates free services and resources to meet the immediate and long-term needs of survivors of abuse.

Branch House consistently makes space for CCAHT to be part of the conversations happening across their community, but one of the most meaningful parts of our partnership has been working alongside their nurse examiners to develop a human trafficking screening tool for the s*xual assault survivors they serve.

We’re grateful to Branch House for showing up alongside us and helping make our community stronger. 💙

🎬 Welcome to Media Review Monday!

Movies, TV shows and music have a big influence on how we understand human trafficking—but sometimes what we see on screen doesn't quite match reality.

So, we're starting a new series where we'll take a closer look at the way trafficking, exploitation, and related issues are portrayed in popular media and compare them with what we know from research and real-world experience.

First up: Pretty Woman 👠 reviewed by our Assistant Director of Adult Services, Jill Ferrie

The movie follows Vivian, a woman who is working in the s*x trade, and Edward, the wealthy businessman who hires her. While Pretty Woman isn't a movie about human trafficking, its portrayal of s*x work, power, money, and relationships gives us an opportunity to talk about some of the misconceptions that can shape how we understand exploitation.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be asking questions like:

🎥 What does Hollywood get right?
🎥 What does it get wrong?
🎥 What myths can these portrayals reinforce?
🎥 And what does the real-world picture look like?

Kind of chic to spend your summer out in the community.

Recently, our team has been busy showing up, making connections, and learning alongside partners and survivors across East Tennessee.

📚 We joined the Communities In Schools team for their 3rd Annual Partnership Event, connecting with organizations that are helping remove barriers and make sure students have the support they need to succeed.

❤️ We participated in International Red Sand Day, joining communities across the country in raising awareness about human trafficking.

🏓 And we grabbed our paddles for a fundraising pickleball tournament with the Rotary Club of Bristol - because supporting the mission can be fun, too!

One of the best parts of our work is getting to meet the people who are already doing incredible things in our communities and finding ways to work alongside them.

We're pretty sure community is always in style. 😉

The Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking is East Tennessee's only nonprofit dedicated exclusively to combating human trafficking for survivors of all ages and genders. Through survivor-centered services, prevention education, and community collaboration, we're working toward a future where every person can live free from exploitation.

Whether you're here to learn, volunteer, support survivors, or simply better understand this issue, there's a place for you in our mission.

We believe meaningful change happens when a community comes together.

Today, we're celebrating Invisible Angels for standing alongside CCAHT in our mission to support survivors across East Tennessee. Recently, they assisted us in reuniting a client with their parent across the country, who they hadn't seen in over a year. Working with partner rescue organizations and law enforcement, Invisible Angels provides on-demand air transport for survivors of human trafficking.
