If you stepped outside and thought, “Is someone having a campfire?”—you’re not alone. That smoky smell is coming from wildfire smoke moving through the area, so we wanted to share a few quick tips to help everyone stay safe and breathe a little easier.
The statewide Air Quality Alert is officially in effect for today, Wednesday, July 15, and is expected to linger through at least Thursday, July 16, 2026.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) issued this statewide alert due to heavy plumes of fine particulate smoke (PM2.5) drifting directly into the Upper Peninsula from active Canadian wildfires, compounding the risks of the current heat wave.
🚨 Quick Safety Guide for Kingsford Residents
• Move Workouts and Exertion Indoors: Avoid strenuous outdoor activity completely, as breathing heavy accelerates the inhalation of fine smoke particles and ozone.
• Keep Your Home Sealed Tightly: Keep all windows and doors closed to block outdoor pollutants, and switch window A/C units or vehicle climate control to "recirculate".
• Upgrade HVAC and Air Filtration: Run central air conditioning continuously using a MERV-13 or higher air filter, or build a DIY box-fan filter to clean indoor air.
• Protect High-Risk Individuals: Children, seniors, pregnant individuals, and anyone with heart or respiratory diseases (like asthma or COPD) should stay indoors, as air quality is forecast to hit "Unhealthy" ranges. Take a minute to call or message older adults, neighbors, family members, or anyone with breathing or heart conditions to make sure they have a cool, clean-air space.
• Keep Pets Indoors, Too: Limit pets’ outdoor time, keep walks short, and bring them inside where the air is cleaner—especially pets with breathing issues or older animals.
• Stop Outdoor Burning: Comply with a strict no-burn rule for campfires or debris
