Mrs. Helen Van Epern, along with several townspeople founded The Town of Kaukauna Historical Society with the notion to preserve the town’s rich history. She was influential in the preservation of School District #5’s schoolhouse building, which is used as the historical society’s headquarters to date. The late Mr. Richard Van Epern and Helen also hosted Wisconsin Farm Progress Days in 1981. She passed away on June 9th, 2026 at 93 years old. Our thoughts are with her family in this difficult time.

The Town of Kaukauna Historical Society would like to take a moment to recognize National Police week and take this opportunity to share the holiday’s history. It is a holiday used to commemorate local, state and federal peace officers who have died in the line of duty. President Kennedy signed the bill into law on October 1st, 1962.

Do you remember?

With the construction of the new middle school, we thought we’d share a picture of then Senator John F. Kennedy attending a rally at what was the Kaukauna High School (current River View Middle School) in April of 1960.

189 years ago today, Charles and Mary Elizabeth Grignon were married in 1837. As a wedding gift to entice his bride to move to his home place of Kaukauna, he built a Greek Revival Style “Mansion in the woods” for her to move into. They were married in the home of George Lawe, “The Father of Kaukauna.” The mansion was finished around 1839, and had a major restoration in the 1980s. Pictured is the Mansion, circa 1993. Thank you!
