A specialized ear acupuncture treatment has a 96% success rate in reversing the tick-borne red meat allergy known as alpha-gal syndrome.

Alpha-gal syndrome is a challenging and potentially life-threatening food allergy triggered by certain tick bites, which sensitizes the human body to a sugar molecule found in most mammals.

For those affected, the allergy means suddenly reacting to red meat, dairy, and other mammalian products, with strict dietary avoidance being the only standard recourse. However, an alternative therapy called Soliman Auricular Allergy Treatment (SAAT) is emerging as a potential game-changer.

A retrospective case series published in the journal Medical Acupuncture found that 121 out of 126 patients (96%) with follow-up reported their allergy symptoms completely disappeared after receiving SAAT, a specialized form of ear acupuncture.

While these results offer incredible hope for those suffering from this tick-borne condition, researchers caution that larger, randomized controlled trials are still needed to fully confirm the treatment's clinical effectiveness.

Another sham controlled RCT using objective outcome measures. It looks like we are making progress in mapping out the specific neural mechanisms of acupuncture. It also looks like it is well worth trying to include objective outcome measures when doing acupuncture RCTs. Subjective effects on pain can be similar but there have been a number of studies now for various conditions where the objective measures (e.g. fMRI, imaging etc.) have shown quite clear differences. Using objective outcome measures also helps solve the generic downgrading of evidence due to lack of double blinding in acupuncture trials which is something that significantly holds back the quality of evidence scores for acupuncture trials.
