As the island slowly recovers from Hurricane Lala, our unique community gallery was spared any damage. Grateful, to say the least.

Support Our Artists After Hurricane Lala 🎨
Many of the talented artists who share their work at the Firehouse Gallery are still recovering from Hurricane Lala. Scattered across the Big Island, many are currently without electricity, internet, or running water at home — even as they continue to create and share their art with our community.

You can help make a real difference right now: purchase original art, prints, or cards from our Firehouse Gallery artists. Every purchase, large or small, goes directly toward helping them get back on their feet.

Joseph Albers (1888–1976) was a German-American artist and educator, best known for his groundbreaking work in color theory and geometric abstraction.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

His most famous series, Homage to the Square (begun 1949), consists of hundreds of paintings exploring how colors interact with and transform one another depending on their neighbors. Nested squares in carefully chosen hues demonstrate that color perception is deeply relative — the same color can look completely different depending on what surrounds it.
