Our members were excited to represent our chapter in the 2026 Kailua Village Independence Day Parade on July 4 this year! Thousands of residents and visitors gathered to celebrate and commemorate America's 250th anniversary by watching the parade that wound through Historic Kailua Village. Our members, dressed in colonial attire, marched alongside a beautifully decorated truck bedecked with flags, banners, bunting, and signs!

As the summer winds down, we look back at some wonderful events that our chapter participated in to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary! Our chapter sponsored an interactive educational exhibit titled “Run through American History” at "A Salute to Our Veterans' 5K Run, Walk, Roll" on July 4. The project, spearheaded by our American History Committee Chair Teresa Fuata, consisted of a series of member designed yard signs placed along the course at Hilo Bay which guided participants through significant events in US history from the Declaration of Independence in 1776 through the present day. A QR code displayed on each educational yard sign encouraged participants to open the link bringing them to a brief history of each historical event featured along the path!

in 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote. Today marks the 106th anniversary of this monumental moment in American history.

DAR member Febb Ensminger Burn played a pivotal role in its passage. Her son, Congressman Harry T. Burn, was prepared to vote against the amendment, and the outcome hinged on his decision. Just before the vote, he received a letter from his mother urging him to change course: "Hurrah, and vote for suffrage!" she wrote, encouraging him to "be a good boy" and vote in favor at the last minute.

The next day, Congressman Burn cited his mother's advice in a speech explaining his decision to vote in favor, securing ratification and forever changing the course of American history.
