🐾 💛 Grab some tissues, because you are going to need them for this story! It is about a very special kitty named Shamus….

Meet Shamus, a sweet kitty rescued on the Big Island of Hawaii by a wonderful human named Rene. Rene rescued Shamus when he was a very small kitten from an extremely unsafe situation. When she found him, he was sick with an upper respiratory infection, and if she hadn’t intervened, his story very well could have had a sad ending. Once Rene saved sweet Shamus, he received the care, love, and safety he deserved in his new life.

Not long after, it was time for Rene, Shamus, and the rest of Rene’s four-legged family to move to Minnesota, where Rene would care for her elderly mother.

🐾 💛 Moving day had arrived! After all the hard work to prepare for a big move across the Pacific Ocean, it was time for Rene and the rest of her gang to make the journey. Rene had jumped through all the hoops to take her pets with her, but unfortunately, Shamus had his own plan. On the way to the airport, Shamus escaped his carrier in the hotel parking lot! Of course, Rene was devastated and knew she had to do everything she could to find him before moving off-island. Although she spent days looking for him, Shamus was nowhere to be found.

That’s when she reached out for help. Thank goodness she did, because that’s when her luck took a positive turn! With the help of Aloha Animal Oasis, Aloha Animal Alliance, and the Pacific 19 hotel staff, Shamus was safely captured. After Shamus spent time with two incredible fosters where he recovered from his traumatic experience, Aloha Animal Alliance made arrangements with Fly Hawaii Cats to get him back to his mom in Minnesota.

Thanks to a group of flight angels, fosters who helped him on the way (you know who you are 😉), and a few long flights, Shamus was finally reunited with his mom in his new hometown.

Not all rescue stories have a happy ending, but this one certainly does, and it is all the reason to celebrate!

We are so happy for you, Shamus and Rene, and we wish you the brightest future together!

Every day, we see the heartbreaking reality of pet overpopulation on our island: dogs being abandoned, Animal Control running out of space, rescues stretched beyond capacity, and puppies being born with nowhere to go.

Now, Hurricane Lala has added another layer to an already overwhelming crisis. Pet kennels have been damaged or destroyed. Families who have been cut off from supplies are struggling to get pet food. Some families are facing circumstances that make it impossible to keep their dogs and are desperately looking for safe places to rehome them.

Our island is inundated with pets who need help. Spay/neuter is one of the most important ways we can prevent the problem from getting worse.

Spaying and neutering your pets:
🐾 Prevents unwanted litters and reduces the number of dogs entering an already overwhelmed rescue system
🐾 Helps keep dogs safely at home — females in heat may escape, and males can wander for miles searching for a female
🐾 Can reduce certain hormone-driven behaviors, including roaming and aggression
🐾 Prevents potentially life-threatening uterine infections such as pyometra in females

Please schedule your FREE spay/neuter appointment before your female gets pregnant or your male wanders off.

With potentially serious impacts from Tropical Storm Lala approaching Hawaiʻi Island, HAKA is urgently expanding our volunteer team to better support our communities before, during, and after the storm.

💜 WE NEED VOLUNTEERS ACROSS HAWAIʻI ISLAND

You do not need to be an animal rescuer or emergency responder to help. There are many ways to support our ʻohana.

🚙 TRANSPORTATION
Assist with transportation or evacuation of kūpuna, individuals with disabilities or access and functional needs, families, and animals when conditions are safe.

🐾 ANIMAL ASSISTANCE
Help with animal transportation, evacuation support, temporary care, supplies, and other animal-related needs.

🏠 SHELTER ASSISTANCE
Support people and animals at designated locations as needs develop.

☎️ DISPATCH & COORDINATION
Receive requests for assistance, make phone calls, and help connect community members with available resources.

💻 DATA TRACKING & INTAKE
Help keep emergency requests, DIRE information, volunteer assignments, and response efforts organized.

📱 SOCIAL MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS
Help share verified emergency information, urgent community needs, resources, and updates.

🤝 GENERAL VOLUNTEER SUPPORT
Emergencies create needs we cannot always predict. If you are willing to help, we want to hear from you.
