Splooting squirrel on our nature walk today, where we found three kinds of oak galls and a whole lot of SLF on our young birch trees. A Belted Kingfisher made an appearance and we found meadow puffballs in the mulch!

Great walk at Neutaconkanut tonight! Very dry vernal pool and creek, but we still found a female wood frog and a bunch of mushrooms, including chicken of the woods, bolete, oyster, and coral. Join us next Friday at Riverside Park 6-7:30 for another nature walk!

We had our last Butterfly Effect walk focused on trees and pollinators Saturday, and were delighted to see several Monarch butterflies on the milkw**d and Joe Pye w**d as well as the less common Golden Northern Bumblebee on red clover. While red clover is not native to North America, like many in the legume family it is high in protein, giving a late summer and early fall boost of protein-packed pollen to queen bumblebees getting ready to hibernate and migrating Monarchs flying to Mexico. While legumes (Fabaceae) can bioaccumulate lead and a small amount of lead was detected in this soil (no amount of lead is safe to ingest), no lead was detected in the leaves or flowers of the wild indigo or lupine. Stay tuned for tree-themed walks this fall!
