Working On Walking

Working On Walking (WOW) is a non-profit, 501c3-certified organization that aims to help pave the way to treat SMA. (spinal muscular atrophy)

The title, “Working On Walking (WOW)”, was coined by a woman named Alyssa Silva, who has SMA I, when she was only ten years old. As a little girl, Alyssa would have lemonade stands to raise money for Spinal Muscular Atrophy and had always dreamed of raising $100 for this cause. Selling lemonade at 50 cents a cup wasn't the most lucrative option; so, with a goal in mind and an incredible support sy

stem by her side, Alyssa decided to branch out and begin WOW. As a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting all efforts related to Spinal Muscular Atrophy, we aim to continuously provide the SMA community with funds, awareness, and hope which all play an integral role on our journey to our ultimate goal—a cure. Working On Walking will provide information on this debilitating disease, as well as offer firsthand experience on what living with SMA is like. And, in our quest to pave the way towards a cure, we will continuously raise funds for SMA research through fundraisers, selling items, and online donations. Our efforts under this organization will be done with love and the faith knowing that we can conquer this disease.

We're overwhelmed with gratitude to share that our charity golf tournament raised over $25,000 for spinal muscular atrophy research this year!

We’re excited to share that Scholar Rock is joining us for the FIRST TIME as a sponsor of the 2026 Working On Walking Charity Golf Tournament! ⛳️💚

For the past several years, Scholar Rock has focused on developing apitegromab, an investigational therapy designed to target myostatin, a protein that limits muscle growth. By blocking myostatin, the goal is to help muscles become stronger and function better, addressing the muscle weakness that many people with SMA still experience despite being on SMN therapy.

Okay, so SMA treatments are available to patients nationwide. Why do we continue to fundraise?

Great question! 😉

In the short span of a decade, we have gone from striving to survive to striving to thrive with SMA, thanks to several treatments now commercially available. However, questions remain. Work still has to be done. Treatments have become the foundation for a better future with SMA, but they are just the beginning.

How it started 🤝 how it's going.

Working On Walking was founded by Alyssa at just 8 years old, when she started a greeting card company to raise money for SMA. Though things have changed a bit around here, we still carry the same passion in our hearts that we had from day one.
