Today's list comes to us from Charles City (I had no idea where this was and suspect you may not know, either, so I'll save you a Google: Another district from NE Iowa).

Remember that schools and librarians are being forced to censor reading materials and do the government's dirty work for them. We are attempting to catalog every removal because it's important to document state-mandated censorship.

People of Charles City, here is your summer reading list!

Here's another list from the northeast corner of the state: 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐇𝐀𝐌𝐏𝐓𝐎𝐍-𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐊𝐄𝐘 𝐕𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐘.

This is the first district we're reporting on that had 𝐍𝐎𝐓 removed any books at the time of the Register's last survey of schools in 2024.

We're not even halfway through the list of 900 new book bans. Which book removal have you seen so far that upsets you the most? What's the most ridiculous? Be sure to let your elected representatives know how you feel about your child's reading selections being chosen by Moms for BĖķiĖķgĖķoĖķtĖķrĖķyĖķ Liberty.

Next up...𝐖𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐋𝐘-𝐒𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐋 𝐑𝐎𝐂𝐊 school district out of Northeastern Iowa. Did you think these book removals were limited to urban school districts with lots of Moms For Liberty demanding to speak to the manager about the horrors of their precious children being forced to read books that mention the existence of gay people? How wrong you were!

Even rural districts are being forced to remove a large chunk of their library collections due to SF496.

Angry? You should be. Remember who you should be angry with though--it's not your teachers or librarians, who risk losing their licenses if they don't comply with the law. If your elected representatives voted in support of SF496, kindly help them find a new job next year by voting for candidates who support the freedom to read. Most Iowans don't support book bans, and our kids deserve better.

Next up we have 𝐈𝐎𝐖𝐀 𝐂𝐈𝐓𝐘. Did you think the damage wouldn't be as bad in a liberal college town? How wrong you are!

Iowa City's first removal list was notable for including Jane Smiley's ðī 𝑇ℎ𝑜ð‘Ē𝑠𝑎𝑛𝑑 ðī𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑠. This one is notable for its length, with 104 new books (the longest list we've gotten so far in this updated round of cataloging book removals). We are sure it broke the ICSD's staffs' hearts to remove so many wonderful books.

Iowa City friends--here is your summer reading list. I am sure our friends at the Iowa City Public Library would be happy to help you get your hands on these!
