On Monday, Oct. 3, the Johnston Police Department (JPD) received a $10,000 Community Betterment Grant for the department’s K9 fundraising campaign. Polk County Supervisor Bob Brownell presented the check on behalf of the Board of Supervisors.

The Johnston Police Department’s K9 program will be unique to the Des Moines metro area. While most police K9 teams are certified in narcotics detection, the Johnston Police K9 will be certified in explosives detection. JPD’s K9 unit will also provide traditional specialty services such as building searches, tracking, handler protection, suspect apprehension, and item/evidence recovery.

β€œThis new K9 team will allow our department to boost its focus on our most important mission of community caretaking, while also providing additional security measures to our greater community, school system, and augment services to critical areas such as Camp Dodge and Joint Forces Headquarters,” said Police Chief Dennis McDaniel. β€œJohnston has become a destination location for well attended community gatherings, and continues to be a recreational hub for family activities and special events. We appreciate Polk County’s unwavering support of regional public safety services, and this K9 program will embrace this model. This is an opportunity to enhance local services and aid our metro law enforcement partners in ensuring the safety of our residents and visitors.”

The fundraising efforts continue through the Johnston Police Officers Association. The association has raised approximately half of the $110,000 fundraising goal, but is always looking for additional donations. The department expects the K9 to be ready in the Johnston community by late summer 2023.

Donations are accepted for the fundraising of the K9 in the following ways:
𝟏. 𝐌𝐚𝐒π₯ 𝐨𝐫 𝐝𝐞π₯𝐒𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐚 𝐜𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐀 𝐭𝐨: Johnston Police Officers Association, Attn: K9, 6373 Merle Hay Road, Johnston, IA 50131. Checks can be payable to Johnston Police Officer’s Association.
𝟐. 𝐎𝐧π₯𝐒𝐧𝐞: https://bit.ly/JohnstonK9Program
Tax-deductible donations of any amount are welcomed and appreciated. All donations are payable to the Johnston Police Officers Association, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, with β€œK9 Fund” placed in the memo line.

Questions regarding donations for the K9 can be directed to [email protected] or 515-278-2345.

Johnston has some of the best employees around. Last December, the City of Johnston was awarded the Leading the Way Award from ETC Institute for ranking in the top 10% of all U.S. cities with regard to resident satisfaction with the overall quality of city services, customer service from city employees and the value for local taxes and fees. Take a moment to thank a public service employee for their dedication to a job well done! Please note that the Public Safety Building will be closed on Friday, Sept. 9, from noon to 5 p.m. for a public service recognition employee event.

Our police, fire and other emergency/urgent services will still be provided even though the buildings are closed.

Thank you for your support as we celebrate our public service staff and their hard work throughout the year to ensure Johnston continues to be the best place to live, work and play.

The Johnston Police Officers Association is excited to support Officer Petermeier and his future K9 partner! The JPOA will be assisting the K9 program in their fundraising efforts. Any donations can be made at https://donorbox.org/johnston-police-officer-s-association-k9

Any and all support is appreciated, even if you can not monetarily support, please share our post! The K9 program will be a great asset and addition to our department.

With today being National Dog Day, the Johnston Police Department (JPD) is excited to announce the selection of a canine handler for our dual-purpose K9 team that will begin serving the Johnston community and the greater Polk County area in the summer of 2023. Officer Petermeier was formally appointed to the assignment this week. Officer Petermeier will begin working with our selected vendor in the weeks and months ahead to train and implement our patrol working dog, which will also be certified in explosives detection.

As Johnston continues to grow and attract more large-scale events throughout the community, we believe this new resource will maximize our community policing and homeland security partnerships. It will also provide an additional resource to our officers on the street who respond to a wide range of calls for service.

Stay tuned to our social media pages for future updates/videos and to track the progress of our canine (K9) team!
