Ashe Food Pantry

Ashe Food Pantry Ashe Food Pantry leads the fight to end hunger in our community by acquiring and distributing food to those who seek aid. Requests for food more than doubled.

Our vision is "No one should go hungry." History of the Ashe County Sharing Center, Inc./Ashe Food Pantry, Inc. Origins:
In 1983, a group of caring and concerned citizens met to discuss hunger in Ashe County. As a result, the Ashe County Sharing Center was established to provide assistance to those needing help in our community. The first year 12 volunteers processed 780 applications for food and

the Sharing Center was open 12 hours per week. Then in 1986, the Sharing Center moved to 03 North 3rd Avenue in West Jefferson. The total budget in 1986 was $4,834.47. For the next 20 years services continued, and the program remained static. Getting Serious About Fighting Hunger:
Things changed in 2008. Economic problems and high unemployment resulted in greater need. In 2011, the Sharing Center joined the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina as a partner agency and committed to the mission of providing food. This new focus on a single task was a turning point for the Sharing Center. Collaborating with the Second Harvest Food Bank and Feeding America, the Sharing Center was now able to identify food needs and develop programs to address them. More Capacity, More Impact, Less Hunger:
Quickly the Ashe County Sharing Center advanced to the front lines fighting hunger in our community. Programs are developed, funded and adapted as needs change. In 2013, Michael Sexton, Executive Director, was recognized as the Dennis G. Hatchell Community Leadership Recipient. The Ashe County Sharing Center was recognized by the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina as the Exemplary Agency of the Year for 2016-2019. The Sharing Center continues to lead the charge in Ashe County as the largest food pantry in in the area. New Name, Clear Mission:

For over a decade the Ashe County Sharing Center’s focus has been to feed our community. Our new name, Ashe Food Pantry, is a clear reflection of our mission statement: Leading the fight to end hunger in our community by acquiring and distributing food to those who seek aid. Our organization has the longest, most extensive experience with food assistance in our area and is the model for partner agencies in the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina 18 county region. We will continue to lead the charge to fight hunger in our community by creatively, passionately and intentionally finding ways to meet the food insecurity challenges of our neighbors every day. Hunger and food insecurity are issues that have solutions and we will not rest until food insecurity is history.

Thank you to all our wonderful friends and family for the many birthday wishes! ❤️ We truly appreciate everyone who took a moment to make our day a little more special.

This year was also a milestone for both of us. Since Carolyn joined our team 10 years ago, this was the first time she has taken her birthday off—and after 16 years, it was the first time I have taken mine off, too!

Over the years, our birthdays have so often fallen on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, which usually means a food distribution or a delivery from Second Harvest. There was always work to be done and people to serve.

But as I get a little older—and have officially reached full retirement age!—I’ve come to appreciate the importance of occasionally taking a day to slow down, reset, and simply enjoy the moment.

Thank you again for all the calls, messages, posts, and birthday wishes. You made our day even better! 🎂❤️

🎉 Happy Birthday to Michael & Carolyn! 🎉

Today we celebrate not one, but TWO very special people who are truly the heart and soul of Ashe Food Pantry! ❤️

Yes, Michael and Carolyn share the same birthday—and as Leos, they bring all the best Leo qualities to the pantry: big hearts, fierce loyalty, incredible generosity, determination, and a natural ability to lead and bring people together. ♌️🦁

We are so incredibly appreciative of everything Michael and Carolyn do to keep the pantry running smoothly. Because of their dedication, compassion, and countless hours of hard work, Ashe Food Pantry helps feed our community with dignity and grace.

They are both deeply caring individuals, and their work ethic is truly unmatched. They give so much of themselves to make sure others have what they need, and they do it with kindness, humility, and heart.

We honestly don’t know how the universe managed to put these two amazing people together—but we sure are thankful that it did! ❤️

Please join us in wishing Michael and Carolyn a very Happy Birthday! 🎂🎈 We are so grateful for you both and all that you do for our community.

Happy Birthday, Michael & Carolyn! We hope your day is filled with the same love and generosity you give to others all year long! 🥳❤️🦁@

We’re stocking the freezers AND the shelves! 🥩🥦📦

Today’s distribution reached 319! Each family received:
• 2 boxes of food staples
• 2 boxes of fresh produce
• 2 dozen eggs 🥚
• Approximately 20 pounds of frozen meat 🥩

That’s a LOT of food moving out the door—and it’s only possible because of the incredible generosity of our donors who provide the resources we need to purchase food and keep our shelves and freezers stocked.

But we’re already shifting gears! With children heading back to school on Monday, August 17, we’re beginning to prepare our weekend food backpacks to help make sure children have nutritious food when school is out.

And believe it or not… we’ve already started packing Thanksgiving boxes! 🦃🍂

At Ashe Food Pantry, there’s always something happening—and always someone who needs a little help. Thank you for helping us keep the food moving! ❤️

We’re working to stock our neighbors’ freezers with meat before winter arrives!

Today, 140 families were served in just 60 minutes, receiving approximately 15–20 packages of frozen meat, plus produce boxes, cucumbers, green beans, eggs, and food boxes.

A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers and to AEV for sending a volunteer to help make it all possible! ❤️

We hope these meals help provide a little extra support to families with children at home during the summer months. Your kindness and commitment make a meaningful difference in our community.

Thank you to everyone who helps make Operation Backpack possible! 💙🥫🚚
