Ashe Food Pantry

Ashe Food Pantry Ashe Food Pantry leads the fight to end hunger in our community by acquiring and distributing food to those who seek aid. Requests for food more than doubled.

Our vision is "No one should go hungry." History of the Ashe County Sharing Center, Inc./Ashe Food Pantry, Inc. Origins:
In 1983, a group of caring and concerned citizens met to discuss hunger in Ashe County. As a result, the Ashe County Sharing Center was established to provide assistance to those needing help in our community. The first year 12 volunteers processed 780 applications for food and

the Sharing Center was open 12 hours per week. Then in 1986, the Sharing Center moved to 03 North 3rd Avenue in West Jefferson. The total budget in 1986 was $4,834.47. For the next 20 years services continued, and the program remained static. Getting Serious About Fighting Hunger:
Things changed in 2008. Economic problems and high unemployment resulted in greater need. In 2011, the Sharing Center joined the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina as a partner agency and committed to the mission of providing food. This new focus on a single task was a turning point for the Sharing Center. Collaborating with the Second Harvest Food Bank and Feeding America, the Sharing Center was now able to identify food needs and develop programs to address them. More Capacity, More Impact, Less Hunger:
Quickly the Ashe County Sharing Center advanced to the front lines fighting hunger in our community. Programs are developed, funded and adapted as needs change. In 2013, Michael Sexton, Executive Director, was recognized as the Dennis G. Hatchell Community Leadership Recipient. The Ashe County Sharing Center was recognized by the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina as the Exemplary Agency of the Year for 2016-2019. The Sharing Center continues to lead the charge in Ashe County as the largest food pantry in in the area. New Name, Clear Mission:

For over a decade the Ashe County Sharing Center’s focus has been to feed our community. Our new name, Ashe Food Pantry, is a clear reflection of our mission statement: Leading the fight to end hunger in our community by acquiring and distributing food to those who seek aid. Our organization has the longest, most extensive experience with food assistance in our area and is the model for partner agencies in the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina 18 county region. We will continue to lead the charge to fight hunger in our community by creatively, passionately and intentionally finding ways to meet the food insecurity challenges of our neighbors every day. Hunger and food insecurity are issues that have solutions and we will not rest until food insecurity is history.

Children Lead the Way 🍋💛

We were so excited and impressed to visit with the incredible second grade team and students at Westwood Elementary School! Thank you for inviting us to speak about Ashe Food Pantry, food insecurity, and the ways we can all work together to help our neighbors in need.

The students asked thoughtful questions and participated in a wonderful discussion about the causes and effects of food insecurity and how kindness and community support can make a real difference.

And then came the BIG surprise! These amazing second graders had just completed a Lemonade Stand unit where they mixed and sold lemonade for 50 cents a cup to raise money and awareness for local non-profits. Ashe Food Pantry was honored to be selected as one of the organizations to receive a portion of the funds they raised!

This is civic engagement at its finest, and proof that you are never too young to make a difference. We truly enjoyed our time with the students and are so thankful for their generosity, enthusiasm, and support. Special thanks to the wonderful teachers who helped make this meaningful experience possible! 🍋👏💙

⛈️ Rain Couldn’t Stop the Mobile Pantry Mission! 🚐🍉

Through the torrential rain, thunder, and lightning, the Mountaineer Mobile Pantry traversed onward to Generations Ashe! 🌧️⛈️🚐

Fresh produce including collards, watermelon, corn, clementines, cabbage, Russet potatoes, sweet potatoes, and more was provided to seniors as they left the facility today, with additional produce available for pick up during tomorrow’s lunch. The seniors were especially excited to take home the collard greens and juicy watermelon! 🍉🥬

The Mobile Pantry continues striving to place fresh, nourishing produce into the hands of those who need it most. We were also happy to deliver the final PEAS boxes for the month of June. ❤️

Rain or shine, we are committed to serving our community!

Despite the heat, we served 210 families in just over an hour today! Most families received multiple dozens of eggs, produce boxes, household products, and frozen meat while supplies lasted, and everyone received three food boxes.

As always, a big thank you to the marvelous volunteers from LifeStore Bank for their hard work and support during the final distribution of May!

The bowls are gone, the tables are empty, and our hearts are full. Empty Bowls 2026, sponsored by Vannoy Construction, was a huge success, and we couldn't have done it without you!

Thank you to the talented local potters who donated beautiful handmade bowls, and to everyone who contributed to our silent auction — both were crowd favorites this year. A special thank you to Michael, Amy, and Lane for organizing, displaying, and photographing the auction items and bringing it back by popular demand!

Most of all, thank you to our sponsors and to this incredible community for showing up year after year. Your generosity and fellowship help further our mission that no one in Ashe County should go hungry.
