Thomas Jefferson Gardens of Greene County
Jefferson, Iowa
May 2026
Dear Friends and Supporters of Thomas Jefferson Gardens,
Over the years, Thomas Jefferson Gardens has existed because of the generosity, dedication, and vision of many people in Greene County. From planting flowers and maintaining gardens to donating funds, volunteering time, attending events, and simply believing in the value of a beautiful and welcoming community space, your support has mattered deeply.
Today, however, the organization is at a critical crossroads.
Several longtime board members and key volunteers are resigning or stepping back after years of service. The reality is that a very small number of individuals have been carrying the majority of the physical labor, maintenance, administrative work, financial oversight, fundraising, and operational responsibilities required to keep the Gardens and Welcome Center functioning.
Despite repeated efforts to recruit additional volunteers and leadership support, the workload has become unsustainable.
At this time, the Board must determine whether there is enough community interest and leadership capacity to continue Thomas Jefferson Gardens as an active nonprofit organization.
We are reaching out to former supporters, volunteers, donors, community leaders, and friends of the Gardens to ask:
Is there a group willing to step forward and help lead, manage, and sustain this organization moving forward?
Areas where help is urgently needed include:
• Board leadership and governance
• Garden maintenance and watering
• Volunteer coordination
• Fundraising and events
• Financial oversight
• Facility and grounds management
• Community partnerships
Without new leadership and committed participation, the Board may have no responsible option other than restructuring, transferring operations to another entity, or formally dissolving the organization.
This is not a decision being considered lightly. Everyone involved cares deeply about the Gardens and what they have contributed to Jefferson and Greene County over the years.
If you are interested in becoming involved, helping organize a transition, serving on the board, volunteering regularly, or discussing possible solutions, please contact:

We ask that anyone seriously interested in helping respond prior to the July 7, 2026 board meeting. The board will make a formal decision no later than August 4th, 2026
Thank you again for your support, encouragement, and contributions throughout the years.
Sincerely,
Alexis Stevens
