August Impact by the Numbers

This month, we had the privilege of supporting 28 individuals and families through our Community Resource Center.

The needs we encountered were as diverse as the people who walked through our doors, including help navigating community resources, housing support, employment assistance, and more.

Every number represents a person who reached out for help, a family looking for a place to turn, or someone who simply needed a little guidance finding the right resource.

That's what Pickens Family Connection is here for: to connect people with the resources, support, and opportunities they need to move forward.

Thank you to the community partners and organizations who continue to help us make those connections possible. We are grateful to be part of a community that believes in showing up for one another.

We asked participants in our Pickens Feeds Pickens campaign if participating changed the way they thought about food insecurity or the needs of children and families in our community.

One participant said, "The pantries were emptied every night. There are a lot of hungry tummies out there."

These pantries are open 24/7 and help families have immediate access to food. If you'd like to take part check out the second slide about how you can get involved.

Mental Health Monday: You cannot change the past, but you can change your future.

None of us can rewrite yesterday. The hurts, mistakes, and challenges we've experienced are part of our story, but they do not have to define the rest of it.

Every new day offers an opportunity to take one small step forward. Healing doesn't happen all at once, and growth rarely follows a straight path. What matters is choosing to keep moving, even if the next step feels small.

Remember, you don't have to make that journey alone. Trusted relationships, supportive communities, and people who believe in you can make all the difference.

Your past may shape your story, but it doesn't have to determine your future. There is always hope for a new chapter.

We asked our community members if any moments or experiences stood out to them when they "adopted" a Little Free Food Pantry this Summer.

"I was so proud of my fellow neighbors/friends stepping up to help others."

When you fill a pantry, you are helping feed families in need. No barriers, no restrictions. Poverty is complex, and we know that canned goods alone won’t solve it. But access to food can ease a family’s burden and show that their community cares. These pantries are a small but powerful way to meet an urgent need with dignity and consistency.

Mental Health Monday: Sometimes the hardest obstacle to overcome, is our inability to receive care.

Many of us find it easier to give help than to accept it. We tell ourselves, "I don't want to be a burden," or "I should be able to handle this on my own." But the truth is, we were never meant to do life alone.

Allowing others to care for us takes courage. It means trusting that we are worthy of kindness, support, and compassion, even when life feels heavy.

Receiving care isn't a sign of weakness. It's an act of strength that reminds us we are part of a community where we can both give and receive.

This week, if someone offers to listen, lend a hand, or simply be present, consider saying "yes." Sometimes healing begins by allowing someone else to walk beside us.

One of the highlights of our Summer was our Pickens Feeds Pickens campaign. Thanks to the generosity of individuals, churches, civic groups, and local businesses, the Little Free Food Pantry at our elementary schools remained stocked throughout the summer. Your willingness to "adopt" a pantry ensured that children and families had access to food while school was out, and we couldn't have done it without you.

To everyone who donated, volunteered, partnered with us, or simply encouraged our work, thank you. Every act of kindness, no matter how big or small, helps build a stronger, more connected community.
