Living Hope Ministries International

Living Hope Ministries International Welcome to the LHMI Page! Thanks for stopping by! The first Hope Centre orphanage is located in Migori, God-Jobe, Oyuma area.

Our goal is to provide a home for as many orphaned children as possible, teaching them spiritually and mentally so that when they leave the home they will be ready to fit into the African society. Additionally, our hope is to shine the light of Christ as we strive to prepare them to become leaders and help their fellow countrymen to a better life. This is perhaps the most important thing, that the

y will be taught about Jesus Christ - bringing exponential joy to their lives as well as promoting their ability to lead many lost souls to salvation. This is the first of many throughout Africa. In addition to the two dormitories, (one for boys and one for girls), a kitchen, garden, dining hall, and one guesthouse currently on the property, there is also a plan for a medical clinic to treat the children at the home. The clinic will also be open to the people of the village. The desire is to serve the residents of this area with health care, health information and spiritual leadership. Not only is basic academic education needed, but education about health, hygiene, HIV/AIDS and work skills are desperately needed as well. Plans are also to have animals at the home for food and teaching opportunities for the children in preparation for their future livelihoods. The same is true of a garden for food and teaching, carpentry shop for repairs, upkeep and teaching, sewing machines for clothes and teaching, as well as bread ovens for food and teaching. The desire is to have enough to support the home but also enough to sell to the community. Our hope is to make each Hope Centre self-sufficient, but until that day we need your prayers and support to furnish Bibles, clothe the children, provide school supplies, food, bedding, towels and personal items for each child.

Today is the day! Today is Giving Tuesday. Today is the day for people all over the world to give for the purpose of helping other people all over the world.

Giving Tuesday is very important to us at Living Hope because it helps us provide all the physical, emotional and most importantly the spiritual needs of 50 or more orphaned children who would otherwise be destitute. This year, we will use the funds to buy new Christmas clothes, give our staff a much-needed bonus and make some repairs and upgrades to our dormitories.

Please help. One-time gifts are greatly appreciated. However, the ongoing giving which comes with sponsoring a child helps provide long term benefits to the child you sponsor. Giving also gives you the joy of helping in a Christ-like manner. You can exchange letters and e-mails with your child and watch him/her grow into a Christ serving young adult.

To donate, visit our website or send checks by mail. The website is www.lhmikids1st.org. One-time or sponsoring gifts may be given there by credit card. Checks may be mailed to:

Salamu marafiki zangu (Greetings my friends)

It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is only two days away and Giving Tuesday is only one week away. This is always a super-busy time of year for Julie and me… Giving Tuesday, cheesecakes, shopping wrapping, decorating, over 170 Christmas cards, church Christmas concert with all its rehearsals, Christmas events, grandkids and so much more keep us on the run.

With Thanksgiving so close, I must stop to realize that I am extremely thankful that God has allowed us to serve Him through Living Hope Ministries. For over 20 years now, we have been able to love Him and love others by helping children as well as adults in western Kenya. The blessings are too many to count.

One of the blessings is to take short term volunteer missionaries to Kenya with us. We always see their lives changed forever. The following paragraphs are some reactions to serving God at the Hope Centre.

I had the privilege of going to Kenya with Living Hope Ministries in June 2025. The people there welcomed us in and made us feel at home. I fell in love with the children at the orphanage and truly enjoyed spending as much time with them as I could. I miss them dearly! This trip taught me to rely on God in a much more powerful way than anything I have experienced in my "normal" life.

Lori

My trip was such a “gift”, a gift from God. The eight days at the orphanage was the highlight, being loved by all the children. I pray God’s richest blessings on them.

Cynthia

When we entered the orphanage all the children gathered around our vehicle and began singing to us. I was so amazed and instantly fell in love with these happy Kenyan children.

It took me several days and lots of prayers to get past the shock of the poverty in this country. I think I had to come to the realization that the Kenyan people may not have many belongings, but they have never known life any other way. I also had to realize that they are happy, kind, friendly and spiritual people.

I got to attend a Ladies Bible study where I met some of the women in the community. I saw them having some of the same life struggles that we all have. But I also saw that they love Jesus, and it completely warmed my heart to see them worship our Lord at both the women’s Bible study and at their church service.

Each day, we got up early in the morning and saw the older children off to school. Then we walked with the younger ones to their school. The other children in the community were initially afraid but warmed up to us quickly. They were so precious. I will never forget seeing them waving to us as we left them each morning at school.

I believe this trip was life changing for me in many ways.

Tami

I was a little out of my comfort zone at first, but my goal when I retired was to get involved in God’s mission work. Having little knowledge about the culture or the location of Oyuma, it was no time until I saw the beauty and friendliness of the people in Kenya.

The team was told that we would be building 3 small huts for widowed women. We worked alongside local Kenyan men and completed these projects, giving each widow a new home. The gratitude of these ladies and the community around them was very obvious. The families and friends cooked a full meal for us and the fellowship we had was amazing.

To me the most amazing part of the trip was the relationship we established with the children at the orphanage. Our goal was to show the love of Jesus with each person we came in contact with. With these children that goal was easily met. They desired to feel that love with open arms. What joy they brought our hearts and that is something I will cherish forever.

Tracy

When we arrived at the Living Hope Ministries orphanage, we were greeted by the joyful, smiling faces of the children. They sang beautiful songs and ran beside our van, waving and cheering as we drove towards our accommodations. After a long day of travel, this warm welcome was a beautiful start to our two-week visit.

Words can hardly capture the joy of spending time with the children at LHM and the people in the surrounding community. Their warmth, resilience, and genuine kindness were contagious, leaving a deep and lasting impact on me. I went with the intention of sharing the Gospel and enriching the lives of those I met, but I came away with so much more. I felt truly blessed by the people I met and the experiences we shared.

If you have the opportunity, please support this incredible ministry and these wonderful people in any way you can. It’s a gift you will always treasure.

Marty

Praise God that we have already received over half of our goal of $10,000 for Giving Tuesday. We look forward to God’s blessings over the next week as Giving Tuesday arrives on December 2nd. Please donate to Living Hope through our web site, www.lhmikids1st.org or mailing a check to:

Storming the Gates of Hell!

Giving Tuesday is on December 2nd, just two short weeks away. As a quick reminder or an explanation for those who missed it earlier, Giving Tuesday is a worldwide organization who helps people who wish to help deserving organizations find those organizations and help in many ways. Giving Tuesday donates its services to organizations like Living Hope with no charge. We are very grateful to Living Tuesday because they have helped us raise thousands of dollars in the past several years.

In this Tuesday’s installment, I wish to explain to everyone why we are involved in something beyond running an orphanage i.e. planting a new church. In short, because God said so. The verse that keeps coming to my mind is Matthew 16:18:

And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (KJV)

The call began in 2004. We were in the midst of our first trip to Kenya with a team of 12 short term volunteer missionaries. We had a meeting with the Southern Baptist International Mission Board in Nairobi. I met with a young full-time missionary who was a church planter. I am sad to say that I do not remember his name, but I do remember he was a Church Planter. He told me that they were very interested in partnering with Living Hope because we were going to be working in an area with the Luo tribe, an unreached people group (less than 2% evangelized). Also, near to us was a tribe located in both Kenya and Tanzania with many people who had never heard the name of Jesus. Reaching those people became a goal that became stuck in the back of my mind.

Many years passed. The IMB had financial problems in 2008 with the economic downturn. They had to declare Kenya a legacy country which means they withdrew from expansion and focused their efforts on maintaining the work they had already started. At Living Hope, we concentrated on learning how to serve God by running an orphanage which was and still is a strong calling from God today.

Then it happened. The years sped by and suddenly, it was 2020. I was sitting in a Sunday School class taught by one of my all-time favorite teachers, Kathy Gwinn at Wears Valley Baptist Church in Sevierville, Tennessee. I don’t remember the verses we studied or even the topic we discussed. However, I do remember God jumping all over me to remind me of the unreached people group in western Kenya and Tanzania. I asked my pastor, Michael Barnes to pray for me and Living Hope as we followed God’s will to reach these people. He gladly did and I am certain he still prays for us.

As I contemplated reaching people in a place I had never seen, I was initially bewildered. But gradually, I realized God had already given us the resources we needed to do His work. He seems to always work like this. He gives you a seemingly impossible task, then tells you how He has already supplied your every need. By that time, we had already built over a dozen Houses of Hope, a tool to provide for a widow, but also to introduce Jesus and plant a church. Praise be to God for giving us our dear friend Shem Okello who developed this idea and help build over 1,500 Houses of Hope throughout Kenya. He is now with Jesus celebrating Him and the work Shem began and continues today.

God had also given us our friend John Oloo who works with the Kenya Baptist Association as their Volunteer Coordinator. When I told John of our call, he quickly got to work and found our unreached people group, the Waregi tribe. These people had migrated into Kenya and Tanzania. They assimilated into the Luo culture, the tribe we had been working with for several years. However, they are less than 2% evangelized. My experience is that is a high estimate.

God gave us His church to help. In particular, First Baptist Ellijay, Wildwood Baptist, First Baptist Holly Springs and Wears Valley Baptist provided money, people and prayer. Praise be to God for Marty Bingham, Tracy Summers, Tammi Summers, Morgan Lee, Cynthia Poor, Lori Rhodes, Andy Davidson and of course my dear wife Julie for traveling to Kenya and helping get this thing started.

This past June, we got our first look at the area we were to serve. The name of the town is Ayego (Ah-Yay-Go). We built three Houses of Hope for three needy widows. These are now serving as centers for Bible studies. We learned that God had provided a pastor, Mark Kasera Onyango who was already leading Bible studies for nine families.

This area of western Kenya in Migori County is the most spiritually dark area of Kenya I have ever seen. For that matter, it may be the most spiritually dark area of the world that I have seen. Over may square miles, there were no church buildings except a small Roman Catholic Church building. This area is strongly influenced by a satanic cult, the Legion Maria cult. They branched off from Roman Catholicism and as such pray to Mary. They believe in their own “Black Jesus”. This was a man born in the area who claimed to be Jesus, stating he would rise again on the third day after his death. Thirty days after his death, his followers decided to bury his dead body.

I encountered one Legion follower who worked with us building Houses of Hope. He tried to shake my faith by asking about many of the difficulties of Christianity. Why does the Bible contradict itself so much? How could a good God allow so much suffering? Why is Christianity broken apart into so many denominations? These were a few examples of his belligerence towards Christ. His was perhaps one of the angriest young men I had ever known, refusing to listen to my answers and interrupting constantly. Finally, he had enough and decided to go back to work. I praise God for the many hours of study and training He has provided and for using those studies through the power of His Holy Spirit.

Finally, and most disturbing, the spiritual darkness was shown through the effects of false religion in the area. As we have encountered many times in Kenya, the Waregi people believe they can work their way to Heaven. We know that our works are nothing but filthy rags (Isa. 64.6) and that salvation is by grace through faith (Eph. 2.8). When asked if they believed they were certain they would go to Heaven when they died, many said no but others said yes. For those who answered yes, we asked “”If you were at the gates of Heaven and Jesus asked you, “Why should I let you into my Heaven?” how would you respond?”” One answer was because I have visited the sick and those in prison. Another was I know because I know. These were typical of everyone’s misunderstanding of salvation. The longer we were in the Ayego area with the Waregi, the more we understood this area NEEDS JESUS. Note: You may recognize the two diagnostic question of Evangelism Explosion, yet another way God has provided for this work.

Some very good things have happened since we left Ayego in June. Pastor Mark is teaching Bible studies at the Houses of Hope. We let the need be known and God’s people have responded with some extremely generous gifts. John and Mark found and purchased a four-acre tract of land to build a church building. We had a fence built to identify and set off the property. We have received several estimates for both temporary and permanent church buildings.

So, what is next? We believe God is guiding us to build a permanent building even though the cost is much higher than a temporary one. We are now discussing a layout for the building that will provide adequate room for worship, offices, and storage. We will have engineered drawings completed and finally, we will build a church building. There is great excitement in the area. Many families have stated they want to join as soon as the building is completed.

Next year, probably in June, we plan to take a team to work both in Oyuma at the Hope Centre orphanage and at the brand new Ayego Baptist Church. We believe the building will be complete at that time, so we will have a dedication service. Then through the week, we will teach the members of Ayego Baptist how to accomplish God’s calling. We will teach them the characteristics of a great church by explaining each characteristic and how to perform them in their church. We will also teach evangelism, which is so badly needed in this area. Finally, with our newly trained church members, we will get out of the building and share Jesus with people in the Ayego community.

Come join us. I guarantee you will see a miracle (or many). Your life will never be the same. Yes, you can do it. This year, our team included those in their thirties and in their seventies. There were no professionals, all lay people called by God. A missionary once told me any American who regularly sits in a Sunday School class can teach the Bible in Africa. Yes, YOU can do it.

Finally, this exciting work does require money. Please prayerfully consider giving to Living Hope on or before Giving Tuesday (December 2nd) to help share Jesus and STORM THE GATES OF HELL!!!

Where Does the Money Go?

Occasionally, we are asked, “How much of the money I give goes to Kenya?” This is a legitimate question as people don’t want to pay for salaries and fundraising here in the US. At Living Hope, no one in the US receives any monetary benefit for the work they do for Jesus and the ministry. Over 95% of the funds we receive is used in Kenya. Our US expenses are mostly postage, office supplies and the accountant we use to keep us straight with the IRS.

If you look at our Kenya budget, it is pretty much what anyone running a business here in the US would expect to see. Salaries, food, clothes, medical fees, school fees, maintenance, fuel, and utilities make up the largest part of our Kenyan expenses. There are however, surprises and opportunities that are not always anticipated in our budget. That is where Giving Tuesday comes in. Here are a few of these surprises and opportunities that we have seen in the past few months:

1. The team we took to Kenya back in June quickly developed a heart for the children of the Hope Centre. As such, they wanted to see those children live in the best condition possible. They noted that several of the kids’ beds had worn out mattresses and linens. They also noted that the inside of the dorms could use some new paint. I knew these team members would diligently pester me until these things got done 😊 so we raised some money and made plans. Every November, the children have their year-end break and are required to go back to their village. As you are reading this, we are receiving 50 new mattresses. Soon to follow, will be sheets, blankets, pillows and pillowcases. The kids will be so surprised to see what will look like a new dorm. The old mattresses and linens will be offered to families who have children sleeping on a dirt floor. It seems that every estimate given in Kenya is lower than the actual cost. That happened with this opportunity. Giving Tuesday funds will be used to cover the shortfall.

2. Every year, at Christmas we buy new clothes for our Hope Centre children. They love it when our clothes supplier comes to visit. He brings samples and measures for sizes. Soon the new clothes arrive, and everyone puts on their new outfits. It is quite common to see many of the girls choose the same dress. Giving Tuesday will help buy this year’s Christmas clothes.

3. Christmas also brings another opportunity to show our appreciation to our excellent staff. We typically give each staff member a bonus of one month of salary. That may seem like a large amount, but the average salary is about 13,000 Kenya shillings or about $100.00 US. This always brings joy to the staff and those who provide. Giving Tuesday donations will help with this opportunity.

4. Sometimes, we have surprise expenses which are not covered by the maintenance or contingency categories of the budget. This year, we had to replace the pump motor and well piping for our water supply well. At 600 feet deep, that was not cheap. We also had to replace the electric meter because Kenya Power would not come out to the Hope Centre. We were regularly overcharged for electricity. It became necessary to install a meter that reports actual measurements long distances with no meter reader. Giving Tuesday will help replenish the funds used for this expense.

5. If you are an American and visit Kenya, you will be asked for money. Over the years, we have learned to be very careful about handing out cash. Our first priority must always be to the children of the Hope Centre. Part of discernment is to determine if the ask is a want or a need. That can be easy. One day, I was in town and heard a young Kenyan man yell, “Hey mzungu, you buy my lunch”. With a smile on my face, I told the young man, “Hey Kenyan, you buy my lunch”. He was so shocked that he let it drop immediately.

At times the needs are legitimate and urgent. When a staff member loses a loved one, they are faced with funeral expenses that can be overwhelming. We have seen cases where an embalmed body has been kept in a mortuary for months until the family can raise the funds to pay for all funeral expenses. We don’t want our staff members to ever face these painful struggles, so we try to pay the expenses they face.

This week we received a request from a woman we have known for years. Helen is crippled and must rely on special shoes and a crutch to walk. She asked for money to replace her worn out shoes and crutch. We have known Helen for over 15 years, and this is only her second request for help. We were happy to help with this very legitimate request. Giving Tuesday helps us take care of legitimate and urgent requests.

The holidays are upon us, and it is time to plan for Giving Tuesday and support for Living Hope Ministries. Over the next four weeks, we will be contacting friends of the ministry to show you ways we use your gifts are used to glorify God, things you may never have considered.

Who is Living Hope?

Living Hope Ministries serves the Lord in accordance with our guiding verse, James 1:27.
Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world (NASB).

In rural southwest Kenya, AIDS, typhoid, malaria, yellow fever and COVID have cost the lives of thousands of adults, leaving their children behind. Some orphans have no adult to care for them and must rely on the kindness of neighbors just to get food. Living Hope visits orphans in their distress with our orphanage located in the tiny village of Oyuma. There, we care for 50 or more children providing the basics of food, clothing, shelter and education in our orphanage, The Hope Centre. More importantly, we share the Love of Christ with many opportunities each week to hear the Word of God and accept Him as Lord and Savior.

Widows are visited in their distress through Bible studies and Houses of Hope. By using volunteers from the United States, we build a new house for a widow in only a day. The construction is simple, but the joy is enormous. Team members from the United States experience the joy of Christ when they see that they can provide a new home for a widow who has only a house that is falling apart. The community experiences joy as the new house then becomes a new church for worshiping Christ. To date, Living Hope has built 22 Houses of Hope as beacons of light.

What is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday is a worldwide organization which promotes the joy of giving. Giving Tuesday pairs together people who are looking for ways to help other people through organizations that do this effectively. Giving Tuesday sets aside one day every year to remind people to give. This year, Giving Tuesday falls on December 2nd.

Dear friends:

It is with the deepest regret that I must report to you the passing of our good friend and fellow servant in the ministry, Pierce Foulk. Pierce and his dear wife, Carma served Living Hope as the Executive Directors of our school, the Carter Education Centre for many years. As Julie and I often said, there would be no school if it were not for the tireless efforts of both Pierce and Carma.

I have copied below a eulogy I wrote to express some of my thoughts and feelings about a man I truly loved and admired. Please join Julie and me as we pray for Carma and family and friends Pierce left behind.

I thank God that He brought Pierce into my life.

Glory be to Him.

Pierce Foulk, my Friend, my Brother and my Teacher

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. (Prov. 17:17 NASB)

Pierce was my friend, my brother and my teacher. He loved at all times. He loved even when we were separated for long periods of time. I never met anyone who was so good at keeping in touch with other people. He taught me the importance of doing something as simple as calling an old friend.

I first met Pierce and Carma back in 1999 at a missions conference I was organizing for our church. They were serving with Wycliffe Bible Translators in Nairobi. They came to us late in the process of organizing the conference and didn’t get all of the opportunities to tell their story that other missionaries did, but they wanted to come anyway. We had several conversations at that conference but when it was over I didn’t think much about it and figured I would probably never see or hear from them again. Boy, was I ever wrong. Much to my surprise, Pierce would call me maybe once or twice a year. We would always talk for at least an hour. He was good at telling me about their lives, but great at listening to what was going on with Julie and me. He taught me how listening makes great friendships.

Pierce and Carma went through several ministry changes and eventually worked with us at Living Hope in Kenya. Some of my favorite memories are of the four of us sitting together after dinner at the Hope Centre swapping stories. Pierce always had the best ones. We laughed and laughed at his stories of teaching, selling books and especially the time he spent in the Navy. I won’t go into detail, but he could be a little mischievous at times. If you have had the pleasure of hearing his stories, you know what I mean.

Now back to Prov. 17:17. Pierce loved at all times. He made certain he never lost track of any friend. But as this verse says, a brother is born for adversity. Pierce was my brother, and I am so grateful to God that He gave me such a brother as Pierce. You know, when you get involved in ministry, Satan attacks and there is always adversity. Pierce helped me through many of the challenges that running a ministry brings. Money problems, personnel issues, theological issues, time problems, and many many more problems are just a part of everyday life in ministry. Pierce kicked Satan in the teeth over and over, so he knew God was in control at all times. To Pierce, adversity was nothing more than proof that Satan was under attack and was counterattacking. His faith kept me anchored during all the years we served together. Pierce was always ready to give me a word of encouragement when we together struggled with adversity. Pierce, as my brother taught me to have faith in the midst of adversity.

I will miss Pierce every day on this side of eternity. I will look forward to the time when we can be together and enjoy the kingdom of God. A verse that brings me comfort is Luke 12:32:

Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the

Notice the tenderness of Jesus as He calls us His little flock. Look at the joy of the Father as gladly gives to us. Look at the gift given to those who accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, the kingdom which is life in eternity with Jesus. Pierce has met Jesus in His eternal kingdom. We can be there together with both of them simply by accepting Jesus. There is joy!!!
